Credit for Microsoft exam: Server 2008 R2 Virtualization
Posted by: admiralk - 01-11-2014, 10:12 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (2)

It has been noted before that can take the Microsoft Exam 70-659: Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtualization for 2UL credits via ACE.
Does Thomas Edison (TESC) give 2UL credits for it and does it count for the CIS specialization area?

ALEKS or SL for begining journey
Posted by: hicandle - 01-11-2014, 04:47 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (3)

I have not taken a math course in 40 years, and wasn't the best at it then. I am very new to this and have poured over the forums. Hope i am doing this right and posting in the right place! Which would you recommend i sign up for, looking to move as quickly as possible and biggest bag for my buck. I am going to work towards a BS in business with a concentration in Human Resources. Starting at ground zero. Have enrolled in Excelsior but have yet to take my first CLEP. Thanks in advance.

Where is your favorite Caribbean Beach?
Posted by: Lindagerr - 01-11-2014, 12:15 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (25)

My husband and I are planning a special vacation for our 30th anniversary this March. We went to Puerto Rico for our 20th and we loved it. We are trying to find an all inclusive vacation this time and we are stuck between going back to Puerto Rico or traveling someplace new. The only other place outside the continental US I have been is Amsterdam, so I have little to base choices on. We want a nice warm location (I am freezing up here in Niagara Falls) and we don't need to go sightseeing just a nice relaxing spot.

I have looked at Cancun, Cozemul, Punta Cana DR, and of course San Juan (can't find any all inclusive there). I don't know enough about any other places to choose them. I have friends that have been to these places and recommend them. So I am asking for your experiences and recommendations. We had a rough year in 2013 and we want to make sure we enjoy this trip. I have been planning for a while I wanted to go for our 25th, but hubby got layed off that year so I really want to make this special.

I am so confused from looking at different sites to book through and different hotels I have gotten to the point I am overwhelmed with all the decisions:willynilly:. I do not want to spend a whole day on an airplane or in an airport so someplace I could get a direct or short layover flight would be nice. Some of the flights I have looked at to Cancun fly me all over the place and end up taking 12-25 hours to get from Buffalo to there. I am sure some of you must have tried a few of these places so where would you recommend?

English Lit CLEP cancelled .... more time to study.
Posted by: cbaranick - 01-10-2014, 09:55 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

My English Lit test was scheduled for 4:00pm today. When I got to the testing center they first told me the lady who runs the exam called out sick. Then they tell me that the CLEP server was down and that I have to come back another day. After having test anxiety for an hour waiting that was not fun to hear.

Anyway...

I now have more time to study as I can either take tomorrow morning or some time next week. I was wondering if anyone else would have anymore advice for me? I have reviewed all the feedback on the forum and studied everything they said that could be on the test. I called Excelsior today to see what my A&I Clep score was because I could not remember and it was a 62 - I tool that test months ago cold. I feel like the A&I lit section on the practice exams for English Lit is a little harder, but probably because it is English Lit like Beowulf and harder to read - but overall I am still pretty decent at that part. I feel pretty comfortable with literary terms and poetry forms as well. The thing that I just CANNOT grasp for some reason is the author and matching them to there works. MY MAIN QUESTION IS ... are the CLEP questions more like the Peterson Practice tests (harder) as in "4 to 15 lines of literature" - then a question "Who wrote this?" or is the CLEP easier and more like...Who wrote the Canterbury tales? If they are the latter than I got it, but I CANNOT read a piece of literature that could be just a very small % of the whole text and be able to tell who the heck wrote it!!! That seems crazy for them to expect that, but that is just my opinion.

I guess I am just trying to get a feel of the format of the questions on the CLEP when it comes to the matching the author to its works section. If it is simply a few lines of literature and I am supposed to know who wrote it - then I am in trouble and have way more work to do. If it is more straightforward and easier than the Petersons tests then I may be able to get by with a 50 since I am comfortable with the other parts of the exam. Can someone please help me with the format of these questions and the level of difficulty they are asked in? Will knowing the author and the title of the work and being able to match them be enough?

Thanks so much to anyone who can give me some detail on this so I know what I am getting myself into.

  Looking back....
Posted by: publius2k4 - 01-10-2014, 07:44 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (4)

If I had it to do over again, I probably would have not included my FEMA courses on my transcript with Charter Oak. I graduated with 129 total credits, and transferred in 6 FEMA credits. This means that if I had not transferred in FEMA, I would have graduated with 123 credits. The number doesn't bother me, but it seems that I did the extra work for nothing.

But it is nice to check from time to time and see this on my transcript:

College math CLEP after Calculus at TESC?
Posted by: wish814 - 01-09-2014, 07:59 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (1)

Hello everyone.. I just reapplied to TESC and am trying to figure out my degree plan. I already have roughly 85 credits. For the BALS degree, I am missing 3 credits of Math under General Ed. (Intellectual skills?). My concern is, I already have 4 credits from Calculus I from over a decade ago on my evaluation. Will TESC accept the College Math CLEP? If not, what are my options to fill these credits? I am also missing 3 credits under Intellectual and Practical skills. I should have just finished this two years ago or at least before they changed the requirements Confusedigh:.. but I'm willing to put in the effort now and move on.. Thanks for any help! =)

Great Review: Rosetta Stone vs. Pimsleur
Posted by: sanantone - 01-09-2014, 05:09 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (2)

Since my library always has a long line of people waiting to checkout Pimsleur Latin American Spanish, I tried to look for a used set to purchase cheaply. I came across this review that pretty much summed up my experiences with Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur. She had an excellent point about the translating. Rosetta Stone shows pictures instead of English translations to try to get you past translating. Their theory is that this works well since children learn languages quickly this way. However, adults do not have the same growing and malleable brains as children. It is also terribly inefficient to not take advantage of the language skills adults have already acquired. Anyway, the excellent point that the reviewer made is that you're still translating except with more steps. You see the grass, you think "grass" in English, and then you translate to Spanish. Because adults have already acquired a language, they are automatically going to translate the picture to a word in their native languages before thinking about the word in the new language. Rosetta Stone expects you to see the grass and automatically think "pasto." This is just another reason why you can't expect adults to learn a language like toddlers.

Part 1

The only thing is that I don't know where she found individual levels of Pimsleur for only $60 each. The website is selling levels 1-4 in a pack for $450. The individual sets are $120 each. I can't even find used copies as cheap as $60 a piece, but I'm going to check eBay. One criticism of Pimsleur that people often have is that it's completely audio. The new CD sets do have booklets that attempt to teach you how to read the language. The DVD sets have interactive lessons and flashcards. But in my opinion, even with the audio alone, Pimsleur is superior to Rosetta Stone.

What are good scores to have on pratice test for Principles of Management Clep
Posted by: Abdul24 - 01-09-2014, 03:51 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

Hello All,

My school requires that I get a score of 47, to get credit for my business class. I am getting 77 on Peterson test, and 70 on Free CLEP prep. Does anyone know if this is a good range of practice test scores before taking the real test? I am studying REA, and notes posted in the Principles of Management Clep forum.

Some people have mentioned using Peterson's Practice Test but it appears that the link someone posted 2012 is for US Military. I am brand new to all CLEP, and also to InstaCert so it would be great to get help. Is there a Peterson's test site that is for regular people, not in the military?
Thanks,

  Need some guidance for graduation
Posted by: bkeenom - 01-09-2014, 01:07 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

I am hopefully beginning my last semester with liberty. I have 24 hours to go. If all goes as planned I am enrolled in my last 18 hours. My plan includes DSST tests for Principles of Finance as well as Money and Banking. If I don't pass these finishing will have to be put off a half semester. Are there alternative tests in case i don't pass? I found the Excelsior for Finance but haven't seen anything for Money and Banking. Any ideas? I need backup plans since these subjects aren't in my wheelhouse and the tests are a little more difficult than some other exams.
