  TECEP Federal Income Taxation
Posted by: eyrobinson - 01-09-2014, 02:53 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (4)

Got word today I passed! So happy! Now I don't have to take that course in my master's degree program. Saving a whopping $1773! I sweated for a whole month for my results to show up on TESC's web site.

The exam was pretty straightforward. I did not study and just brought Prentice Hall's Federal Taxation 2013 Individuals book with me to the exam and a calculator. The exam was definitely 3 hours long. I thought I wouldn't have enough time to finish, but I finished with 19 minutes to spare (not counting a bathroom break and a stretching break). I brought a Starbuck's mocha before the exam to keep me alert and cut down on my anxiety and I was good to go (I also hate coffee! Yuck!).

The study guide TESC gave was straight on with the number of questions involved and types of questions asked. I would say there is no reason to study because you have no idea what is on the test especially when it comes to the word problems. There is just too much information to consume. That is why it's called Tax Research! The test is nothing but researching the problem in the book and being able to comprehend and apply the tax principles. All in all the test was not difficult in my opinion, just time consuming, and tedious. Read, reread, and read again to make sure you comprehend the question and the possible answers. Make sure you are looking at the right tax principles in order to apply them to the questions.

I can say one thing though...I think I might love a career in tax. I love set rules and procedures along with research!

WHEN should I apply to COSC? Still finishing up at a tech school
Posted by: cabreban - 01-08-2014, 05:53 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (7)

I know if I was applying to excelsior I would wait until I complete my associates degree at Chattahoochee Technical College because of the $500/year fee.

I am going to school to be a Board Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. I have 57 credits right now. Once I complete my associates, I will have over 134 credits...15 hours of upper division comm, lots of health science credits and gen ed. I am pursuing an Occupational Therapy Assistant associates in applied science.

When should I apply to Charter Oak to make sure I have a bachelors program they will accept? I am thinking of a design my own degree: BS in Health Communication. Is there a downside of applying early? When should I start the process? I have about 2.5 years or so before I will be done with my COTA.

Thanks,
cabreban

  Job Offer!
Posted by: rebel100 - 01-08-2014, 05:01 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (22)

Well,

I have been offered the job! Smile

But I haven't accepted it yet, The offer is $5-6/hour lower than I dreamed, and $2-3/hour less than I really hoped for. Deflating in a way.....but I got the job!!!

I have asked them to take one more look and see if they can bump the pay. They did offer another $0.40/hour once the MBA is official so there is that.

I'm happy and frustrated at the same time. I feel blessed to have a job and blessed to have been offered the position. I think my Boss and the local HR are on my side, good to know you have friends.

The difference between what I hoped and what they offered is small, yet significant.

BSBA CIS 1 Upper Course Needed!
Posted by: tophertheck - 01-08-2014, 03:58 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (10)

Hi. This is my first post I've actually made here. I'm currently enrolled at TESC and I've ran into a bit of a snag. I failed my last needed TECEP twice. I need an upper level course to fit in my area of study and it is literally the last 3 credit hours I need. My annual enrollment ends in March and I'm not sure if they will let me take another course at this point. I would prefer to save the money and not take another course and not have to pay any more enrollment fees. Does anyone know of any upper level CIS electives that I can take quickly and cheaply by test, online, or through another school that they will accept? Any ideas for what to do would be appreciated. My degree plan looks like this:

For the people who think they matter, US News 2014 Online Bachelors Programs Rankings

They have improved their methodology. Peer reputation has been factored in; it wasn't included before.
Methodology: Best Online Bachelor's Programs Rankings - US News and World Report

Charter Oak State College dropped to #48. Thomas Edison State College's rank is not published (US News does not publish the bottom 25%). Excelsior College is not included. They probably decided not to participate (good for them).

StraighterLine courses not transferred into my degree plan.
Posted by: Daithi - 01-08-2014, 03:41 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (23)

I recently sent in all the courses I took via StraighterLine, ALEKS, CLEP, and DSST. For some unknown reason they didn't accept several of the StraighterLine courses on my transcript (with no explanation). In case someone else experiences this problem, I thought I would post how I am handling the situation.

I sent the following email to academicadvising@tesc.edu--

Quote:I received my evaluation back for a BA in Liberal Studies (I'm under the 2012-13 catalog). Everything looked good except that several of my StraighterLine courses weren't included in the evaluation. A DSST course was also missing from my evaluation.

Those courses are as follows--

StraighterLine Western Civilization I, which should transcribe as HIS-101 and satisfies Gen. Ed. Social Sciences.
StraighterLine Western Civilization II, which should transcribe as HIS-102 and satisfies Gen. Ed. Social Sciences.
StraighterLine Introductory Psychology, which should transcribe as PSY-101 and satisfies Gen. Ed. Social Sciences.
StraighterLine Introductory Sociology, which should transcribe as SOC-101 and satisfies Gen. Ed. Social Sciences.
StraighterLine U.S. History I, which should transcribe as HIS-113 and satisfies Gen. Ed. Electives.
StraighterLine U.S. History II, which should transcribe as HIS-114 and satisfies Gen. Ed. Electives.
StraighterLine Introduction to Criminal Justice, which should transcribe as AOJ-102 and satisfies Gen. Ed. Electives.
StraighterLine Business Communications, which should transcribe as COM-300 and satisfies Area of Study - Upper Level.
DSST Introduction to World Religions, which should transcribe as REL-405 and satisfies Area of Study - Upper Level.

Additionally, your evaluation has my StraighterLine Organizational Behavior transcribed as MAN-311 and in the Gen. Ed. Social Sciences section. I've been told it can transcribe as PSY-361 and satisfies Area of Study - Upper Level.

Thank you so much,
[my name]
College ID#: [my college id]

I tried to be as helpful as possible in assisting the advisor with matching courses to the TESC equivalents. This is the email I received back a day later--

Quote:We have solved your issue--

Hello [my name],

I sent an email to the Registrar's office to inquire about the Straighterline credits. I moved MAN-311 to the AOS.

I wouldn't exactly say this has solved my issue, but I'll give it a few days to see if they award me the credits for my courses, but nothing so far. They also didn't change MAN-311 to PSY-361. I'm not sure if MAN-311 counts as a Liberal Arts course and applies to my Area Of Study, but if they are putting in the AOS (i.e. Area Of Study) then I won't say anything unless they later say it doesn't count.

I'll keep people apprised of how this goes.

Technical school: will it transfer to the Big 3?
Posted by: cabreban - 01-08-2014, 01:23 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

Presently, I have about 57 credits of college work (15 hours in upper division 300 and 400 communication courses) I will be taking 6 hours this spring (anatomy physiology 1 with lab) and medical terminology... 10 more hours in lower division (A & P 2, abnormal psychology and microcomputers). I am pursuing an Occupational Therapy Assistant associates in applied science. Once I complete my degree at my local technical college and become a (board) certified occupational therapy assistant, I will have over 134 hours of coursework (see below).

Once I complete my associates, I would LOVE to go ahead and apply to one of the BIG THREE to get my bachelors with my 134 hours of coursework. Which of the schools do you think will be a great option? What type of bachelors? Advice? What do you think I will have left to complete this degree?

Would a B.S. in Health Communication make sense?
