2 BA Degrees From 2 Universities?

Hey guys! First off, thanks for existing. With the help of trolling through this forum and transferring credits from my old community college, Sophia and SDC I'm starting SNHU for my BA in Graphic Design in August with only 11 courses to go!

However, here's my situation. After I get my BA in Graphic Design, I'm going to work on improving my portfolio before applying for jobs. Once thats done, I've been toying with the idea of also getting a BABA at UMPI. Why? For a number of reasons, but essentially I think it'd help me in the long run for supervisory positions. 

Would there be any issues, applying for a bachelors again at UMPI after getting one from SNHU? I've done my bit of googling and searching the forum but I've gotten mixed answers. People suggest I just double major, but that'd cost a LOT more time and money compared to attending UMPI and not worth it imo. If I did this, should I even request a transcript from SNHU or just avoid it and submit the transcript from my community college and alternative credit courses? I've just heard that some universities will not let you transfer credits if they've been used for another degree at a different school. But then other people say its no problem. I just don't know what's true!

There shouldn't be any issues with getting a second degree at UMPI after getting one from SNHU. They should waive the GEC requirements, leaving you with just the major (and maybe electives?) to complete. You'll need to complete at least 30 credits at UMPI to get a degree from them.

I think the people who say that credits are "used up" are largely mistaken. They do get used up in one sense but pretty much only for the AOS. For instance, let's say that you were trying to get a History degree at one school and then an Art History degree at another school. A class called "History of the Italian Renaissance" might work in the AOS for both degrees. However, schools tend to want you to obtain new credits in the major/area of study so you'd need to take a different class at the second institution in order for you to obtain the second degree.

Some people misinterpret that as needing to start over completely from scratch when that's just not true at most schools.

It’s no problem at all. I am gearing up to pretty much do the same thing. I have a degree from a long time ago. I applied at Northern Arizona University for a Management degree. It’s very similar to UMPI. They have a competency based program along with B&M programs. I love everything about what I have seen so far. I was going to go straight to an MBA, but I think I have been out of the game for way too long to jump in to graduate level right now. In my trial term at Walden, I have only been able to finish one competency and I have about two weeks left. So, after this, I will probably go ahead and start a term at NAU. They took all of the credits that I have and applied them to all of the gen ed and elective courses. I have to take 54 more credits and they are all AOS courses that I do not already have.

I'd suggest you find a forum dedicated to the field of graphic design. Talk to people in the field and find out their take.

I don't work in graphic design, so don't know, but please consider carefully:

1) Why not get an MBA? Do some research on BBAs, are they valuable in Graphic Design?

2) Will the employers care if you have a second BA? Will that make you look like you are desperate? Unfocused?

3) Is management an entry-level position in your field? Will employers hire someone with 0 experience in your field to be a manager with a BBA? or even with an MBA?

Personally, I went to UMPI for a second degree. That was AFTER a career change. After I had applied to jobs and my BA was clearly the reason I was turned away. And after getting my new UMPI degree I deleted the old degree from my resume, because it was no longer relevant. Having two degrees at the same level on a resume looks very odd to me.

You won't have any trouble getting into UMPI. Because you already have a bachelor's degree you will be waived from the GEC requirements. The GEC is their general education curriculum. You will have to submit transcripts from everywhere you've taken classes. Every school has their own transfer credit policies. You'll need to complete a minimum of 30 credits at UMPI. You'll need to complete a required minimum UL courses in the major and out of the major at UMPI. 

A suggestion is to consider an MBA at WGU once you complete your bachelor's degree. WGU is also competency based.

But the coursework for an MBA sucks if you aren't a business-y person.  But I guess the WGU MS in Management & Leadership might be a good choice for someone who doesn't want an MBA. Business-lite.

 As a side note, there is a Facebook group for WGU Accelerators in case you haven’t already found it.  Could be a good place to bounce ideas off other students.

I'm already on the accelerators group.   I don't know of any UMPI helper groups. UMPI is a MUCH smaller school. They currently only accept up to 150 students in YourPace which is pretty shocking. They are looking to grow up to 400 in the next few years. Still a long way from WGU.

Both an MBA and a MSML are FULL of business courses. At WGU 4 classes are in both the MBA and the MSML. So there's quite a bit of overlap. Neither one is a business light degree. They're both business degrees.
