  ECE Principles of Finance

Has anyone taken the Excelsior version? The flash cards refer to the DSST exam. I have been gone a few years but am now doing a final push to get things finished. Not sure anyone from a few years ago is still around but Instantcert's method has really improved! I appreciate the explanations and greater detail. Thanks, Johanna

Best Route to Take For An Associates
Posted by: Nerheim55 - 08-08-2014, 03:52 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (12)

After talking with my fiancee about her current education status of just passing her NCLEX and the final step to becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse, we've decided it's best for her to at least get an associates from somewhere since she currently has about 80 credit hours built up. Does anyone know the best route or which school would transfer best with her current credits. I realize that the majority of these would probably only be accepted as electives especially the 1-2 credit each courses.

TESC Per Credit Hour Plan Annual Enrollment Status
Posted by: cloakswall - 08-08-2014, 03:10 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (5)

I'm finishing up the last couple of credits I need to graduate with a BA in Communications from TESC. Everything except for the Capstone will be done by the end of September. My enrollment is under the per credit hour plan and it ends on Nov 10. I plan to enroll in the September Capstone that ends on November 23rd. Assuming I apply for graduation before Nov 10, will everything be okay re: enrollment status?

Hello All,

I want to graduate with a GPA. What is a good class to take at TESC online? I was thinking of doing Managerial Communication from Thomas Edison but please let me know if you have any recommendations.

  Just passed microbiology via straighterline
Posted by: smf6824 - 08-07-2014, 10:42 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

Finally after going insane and sleep deprived for the last month I ended up passing Microbiology, Business Ethics, and Business Statistics. All I should need now is Physics 1, Marriage and Family, and the BSAST capstone at TESC. I will be taking Physics and Marriage/Family at a local community college to take advantage of the post 9/11 GI Bill, plus I am not sure I could test out of physics (It seems rough). The cool thing about Straighterline was that I was able to complete all three courses for only 155 dollars!!! 9 credits for 155 dollars!!! I utilized a partner college discount for $50 off for Business Ethics and Statistics, after that I asked a student adviser if they had other specials and was given one for $20 off; since Microbiology was only $25 I got a good deal. I realize straighterline may not be the best option for most students out there; however, if you can use it and find coupons/specials it can be quite nice. Also if you do research you can find a business ethics book for free on this forum. Not to mention since saylor.org provides the information for microbiology you can take their course prior before straighterline as a great study resource or review. I have a decent biology background so it wasn't too bad for me. Either way check out Straighterline, I have nothing bad to say about them. Good Luck everyone

APU Has Announced a BS in Electrical Engineering
Posted by: UptonSinclair - 08-07-2014, 09:33 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (14)

This is an exciting announcement from APU. According to what I have read, they plan to pursue ABET after the first student graduates from their program. If they are able to pull off accreditation, it will be an amazing addition to online education. There are only two full online EE programs that I am aware of and they are both very expensive. $250 per credit would be amazing.

  Please Help
Posted by: janedoe - 08-07-2014, 09:18 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (12)

Hello, I’ve been a long time lurker here at this forum and finally decided to sign up, and I’m glad I did so; I’ve learned a ton.

I have been in community college for the past 4 years, going part time, with a full time day job. I went to see my advisor (most uncaring person I’ve met in my life), and see what classes I have left, and turns out I have about 30 credits left. I feel like I have been in this community college trap for so long now, and have thrown so much money at it. My of lack of high grades is because of my day job and juggling a full family, which I now know shouldn’t be an excuse after seeing so many stories here. The school I’m attending has such horrible professors, and I’m limited to the classes I can take in person to twice a week after work and taking online classes.

Major: Political Science

Attempt Hours: 62 (including math remedial classes, I failed some of these but eventually knocked them out).

Earned Hours: 44, I have about 29 credits give or take (including 2 classes I need to make up, I got a D and F in, quite some time ago).

Current GPA: 2.95
I should add that a majority of my grades are more B’s than A’s, and weighing my GPA down is PSYCH (D) and College Algebra (F).

My plan is apply to a decent Law School, and I am able to readily get good letters of recommendations.

My question is, should I:

1) Keep working towards this AA, and hope for the best. Take the CLEP for Psych and maybe college algebra. I would still be here for another 6 months possibly, at the very least. Risk the possibility of having Law schools look at my transcripts and laugh, and have the risk of them seeing my poor math grades and remedial grades (regardless of retaking them). Im not sure if would be able to use FEMA credits. This CC only accepts CLEP for test out credits, and only allows some credits on their list.

or

2) Join TESC and follow one of the programs set out by some members here. I would still run the risk of having the BAR finding my old CC’s grades (I’ve moved states when I was younger and never transferred bad grades). I would hopefully have a significantly higher GPA, and stand out to better law school prospects. I don’t know how hard and demanding the curriculum is at TESC. Im not sure how higher law schools would view one of the big 3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank God for the Affordable Care Act
Posted by: sanantone - 08-07-2014, 08:17 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (13)

The insurance rates for graduate students, adjuncts, and part-time employees of the State of Texas are outrageously high. While full-time employees have their premiums fully covered, others only have half covered, and that half is high. My premium will be so high, that it's more than 9.5% of the salary that I'll be making. Because it's over that 9.5% threshold, I will most likely qualify for a subsidy if I purchase on the marketplace. But, even without the subsidy, the insurance rates on the marketplace are much more affordable. Would you believe that? Insurance rates that aren't subsidized by an employer or anyone else are lower. That is how ridiculously high the insurance rates are for Texas government employees. I thought tort reform was supposed to bring Texans some relief. That was a load of bull crap. The huge growth in frivolous lawsuits is a myth; that's why we haven't seen any relief. It looks like I will be purchasing "Obamacare" even though I'm exempt from the insurance requirement due to my employer-provided insurance being above 9.5% of my income.

  Interesting Competency-Based Options
Posted by: sanantone - 08-07-2014, 05:52 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Central Washington University is offering a competency-based degree in retail management and technology. Their website is confusing, but the cost of $6,000 per 6 months doesn't make them a good option anyway.
Information Technology and Administrative Management | Get an education that gets you noticed

Brandman University is offering a competency-based bachelor's in business administration (don't we have enough of these programs?) with concentrations in information systems management, logistics and supply chain management, management and organizational leadership, and marketing. They are cheaper than WGU at $5,400 per year.
Program Overview Competency-Based Education | Brandman University

Lipscomb University's CORE program is not nearly as flexible as the other competency-based programs. They have you go into their assessment room and demonstrate what you already know for a maximum of 30 credits. Those 30 credits may or may not apply to your major of choice.

Washington's community colleges are going to start a pilot program of offering a competency-based degree in business administration (yay, another business administration program).
