Computer Science, then Masters
#31
It's pretty easy for international students to take classes at Oakton. I know a couple of students here have previously done so. If you're going to be doing online classes, you can simply fill out the standard application form. More information here: https://www.oakton.edu/admissions/apply-...l-student/
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

I've seen there are problems for people outside the US though, as access to myOakton is only from within the US?

Are there other CC like Oakton that have lots of computer science related courses?

VPNs are your friend. Oakton doesn't try to filter them out. At least, not when I took their free class offering.

XAMK and Metropolia in Finland are popular choices. But I assume you mean a US CC. Not 100% sure how many of these are available online nor what their policy is on international students, but College of DuPage has a lot of CS and CS-related classes. https://catalog.cod.edu/courses-a-z/cis/ Most of these classes would probably transfer in as ITS at TESU and be useless for a Comp Sci or BSBA CIS degree: https://catalog.cod.edu/courses-a-z/cit/ But, if any of them interest you, this would be a case where you'd ask an advisor to pre-plan a class (if possible).

If I preplan the class with an advisor, can they still reject it afterwards?

In theory, yes. In reality, I don't think that has happened any time recently. There was maybe once or twice in the past couple of years, but I'm pretty sure that the course was put back once the student(s) appealed the prior approval.

Fantastic. Do you have any tips and tricks to help them get approved? Email a specific person, ask in a specific way etc?

Thanks again

https://www.tesu.edu/current-students/advising/index

For this purpose, you can simply email academicadvising@tesu.edu and say something like "I would like to have XYZ class from Oakton Community College preplanned in my AOS." Stick to one class at a time for your requests. If they say that the class will not work there, you may reply with "Thank you. What about ABC class from College of DuPage instead?" or something along those lines. You may need to provide a syllabus or course description from the CC to have them preapprove a class.

Do not follow this advice for SDC/Sophia classes. For those classes, just follow the wiki. Big Grin And don't ask them at all about XAMK or Metropolia. You'll just badly confuse the advisors.

Thank you. Guess we'll see how it goes. At the very least DuPage has linear algebra and discrete mathematics, and the cheapest other RA credits I could find for those were Westcott, and this seems like a better option.

You did check out https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sources_of_Credit yes? Of course, not all of those accept international students.

Yes, I would recommend trying those sources of credit or even the institutions for obscure ones here: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Obscure_Credits Basically, I would focus on the community college options first before you move up to the universities, the main reason is the price, but the other is the option to do 6-8 weeks terms versus the 12-16 week terms at the universities... You might want to create an action plan/degree spreadsheet and post those updated courses you want to take so we can review to make sure it fits your degree and prerequisites for the Masters.
