Bad news, Everybody!

I wonder if there is any chance that they will keep the GREs but simply change the way credit is given. It would be more than a pity if they were to drop them. It's one of the things that makes EC unique -- and the main reason why I chose EC over TESC.

Same here. TESC actually has a lot of advantages: FEMA, 80 cc credits transfer, etc. Plus for me I'd pay in-state tuition. I only went with Excelsior because of the GRE.

FEMA wasn't that big of a thing for me. The topics look so boring; I don't know if I could tolerate more than a couple. Not to mention I don't have any CC credits. I also like EC's name better than TESC's, which apparently isn't the norm.

Well, it looks like it's not too late for you to use the GRE. Hope you cream the Math GRE.

On the behalf of prospective students, I asked this of Excelsior and got the following response. If this policy effects you, please read this:

Hello [Maniac Craniac's Real Name ],


Thank you for your message. At this time the, whether or not the GRE's will continue to be accepted for credit, is being discussed, among our decision making bodies. We do not yet have confirmation about whether we will continue to award credit for these exams or no longer award credit for them. If we make this change, students who have been enrolled and want to take advantage of the current GRE policy, would be grandfathered in.

At this time, the best advice that I can provide to you, is to remain enrolled. Any lapse in enrollment and student would lose the grandfathering.
If this change is made, students who enroll after July 1, 2010, would be subject to the new policy, where we would not award credit for the GRE.

Maybe it would be a good time for people to send emails to EC asking about GRE's their as either enrolled or prospective students? If they feel there is a siginificant interest in them, perhaps it would help in their decision to possibly keep them as available for credit. As it stands now, I would imagine not many of their enrolled or prospective students go this route anyways. Maybe they feel it's not that important to most people so it is ok to drop it?

.......You are enrolled as soon as you get them a completed enrollment form and they take your money. As long as you don't trigger a "re-enrollment event" (my own term) you shouldn't lose the policy you started with. Examples are dropping out and coming back or changing from the Liberal Arts school to the Business school. I don't know if changing majors would count as a re-enrollment event........

My advisor still does not know why the GRE policy is being changed.

I was just told that changing majors WITHIN the Liberal Arts school will NOT change the academic policy date.

As far as I can tell, earning an associate degree and then having to RE-ENROLL after it is conferred to finish a bachelor's degree WILL cause a change to the academic policy date.

So, another update. I was allowed to pay and completely enroll yesterday. The people were quick because I made it clear my intention to get in before policy changes. The customer service of the staff is fantastic.

Now that I was an official student, I got to talk to advisors higher up on the food chain. The info they gave me is about the same as what has been posted by others. The decision to discontinue GRE's is being strongly considered for the July, 1 date. They are also discussing what to do with people who enroll before, but submit GRE scores after said date. My advisor said that the faculty has uniformly recommended allowing "grandfathering" of previous policy, and the school has always voted similarly in the past. This action is pretty much standard across academic institutions, and is already the policy in place regarding the upcoming addition of a capstone course, which is good news.

Just to reiterate, anyone planning on using GRE's at EXC, waive your admissions transcript review and enroll now.

Thanks for the advice. I sent them a message requesting to waive the unofficial evaluation. I don't see what it provides for me anyways, as I already have a good idea of how my credits line up.

This thread has been very helpful. I just enrolled this wek at Excelsior and wnat to get a BS Math. I enrolled because of the GRE option to get credit. After reading this thread I plan on submitting a plan to the school immediately an asking them to approve. If they don't approve I think I will just get a liberal studies degree by testing out of as many courses as I can.

Either way I want to get done this year if possible.

I eventualy want to get a MS in Stat.

I'm new and I have questions regarding the GRE as well as reduced enrollment fees via joining a partner organization. I just read (today) that someone joined POAG. I want to join as an associate but the only online option is joining as an active member. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to fill out that online application unless it's valid for both associate & active members.

If I am able to join online, can I in theory join POAG tomorrow and then call Excelsior and mention my membership and pay the reduced enrollment fee? Also, can one pay that fee ($150) in multiple payments? I have an expensive training course I have to pay for soon and need to save as much as possible.

I signed into MyEC and saw that I had applied (paid the $75 application fee) a few years ago in the middle of moving. I didn't request any transcripts be sent but I did ask to be put in their payment plan (I think). Would I have to pay the application fee twice?

Also, I've read recent posts about the Psych subject exam and study aides. Could someone one point me to the same type of info for the Bio exam?
