zmama32 Wrote:So, interesting news.....I sent my advisor another email. My advisor TODAY decided to tell me HTYH will NOT be accepted for Science. I'm so frustrated, because I discussed this with her several times, and she assured me that it would count as science. I needed an elective, so this isn't a waste, as I can apply HTYH.
Sometimes, I think my advisor is a moron. I ask her questions and she gives me different answers at the last minute. I make a point to discuss everything with her first, so I don't waste time and money.
So, I still need 9 science credits. I asked about Straighterline, she said she would ask the director of General Education and get back to me. Fingers crossed that they'll accept it, because I really want to take the Environmental course (since I have studied for environment) and the test is open book. I think I could get it done in a weekend.
But now, I still need 6 credits. Straighterline has a promo for B1G1 free for courses. Do I take Nutrition? Do I try a UExcel or a CLEP? I don't think I can handle the Natural Science or Biology CLEP (both of which are 6 credits), because I'm just not that smart. I don't think I would do well.
Does your school not have the equivalencies for CLEP, DSST, and Uexcel written anywhere? They have to have a written policy somewhere.

Nope. They just state on the website that they accept them and speak to your advisor. My advisor happens to be in lala land.

There's no CLEP that's so hard you cannot pass them without a little effort. Both of those are very passable exams and I think you're either not giving yourself enough respect or giving the exams way too much. If you just don't like tests, obviously that's a different story.

I really appreciate your kind words Yanji! Actually, I really appreciate all of the kind words. I love that I found this forum and how everyone is so helpful to one another!
I think I'm giving the CLEP way too much credit, but I'm terrified! I failed Environment and Humanity DSST and I really thought I was prepared. Maybe I'm having an adverse reaction to the testing process.
So, I definitely want to do the Nutrition ECE, and if I want to attempt the 6 credit CLEP, where do I start? Biology or Natural Sciences? I'm thinking Natural Sciences but I read somewhere that it's harder than Bio.

After finishing the high school Bio course, my sisters studied the REA book and SpeedyPrep, and passed with 60-somethings. I took Natural Sciences a year after finishing high school sciences. I studied for a couple weeks and got 64. I didn't feel it was too hard, as you need to know about a lot of subjects, but not a lot about each one. It's wide but not deep. Here's my feedback.

Thank you so much! You've given me a little more confidence in Natural Sciences! I think I might go for it!
That's a really good review and really in depth! I appreciate you sharing with me!

No. Your advisor doesn't get to pick and choose. This is not a slam on you, this is a slam on the system. THIS is why I said my concern over and over about the science class, because advisors don't get to decide, they have policy and rules to follow. These rules, though they can change from school to school, generally don't. They look them up in their little book and then tell you what they found (even if it feels like your advisor made up her mind all by herself, she has no power, she is just reading it out of a book) and the notion that a health class is science is ridiculous. I know DSST has it as a science, but it's not. SL does this too, be careful. For example, they consider history to be a humanities. My point is, that these companies/businesses (SL, DSST) would serve their customers better if they used the same classifications as most of the colleges do. But anyway...
I'm going to tell you that the SL course in nutrition is iffy in my opinion. Your best bet is sticking with CLEP over DSST and sticking with chem, bio, natural science, or physics.
PS you are smart enough. How much work it takes to get all that crap into your brain depends on you. I am a terrible test taker, so in subjects that I struggled in, I took classes. In fact, I took ALL my sciences as classes. Homework I do well, tests, not so much- so my sciences came out well because I'm good at homework. See, it's just taking your own strengths and making them work FOR you.

Can someone tell me what the REA is? Is it a book or a website?

I'm seriously leaning towards the Natural Sciences CLEP. I'm pretty good at remembering terminology and definitions, so that's a plus for me. I'm not into the idea of taking science online, which I am doing with my other classes. I would love to study for the Natural Science exam and get 6 credits, just so I can take one more exam and be done with it. I hope the stuff I study for in Natural Sciences will help me with another exam....
I would do Straighterline, but I don't have the time to waste waiting for my school to make a decision. It's time to study and pass the Natural Sciences CLEP!
You are all great motivators. Thank you.
P.S. Jennifer, I liked your FB page. I think it might come in useful for some of my fans as well. http://www.facebook.com/crazycouponingmoms
