To anyone who has taken an online course at TESC
Posted by: livingproof - 12-03-2008, 10:45 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (6)

So, I'm in the October semester and finals week is Dec 15. I've talked to all 4 of my mentors repeatedly and two employees at the registrars' office about getting my grades in ASAP so I can mail out transcripts to graduate schools and law schools that I'm applying to before the winter break. Everyone agrees that it can be done, but there seems to be confusion on HOW it can be done. All 4 of my mentors agree I can take the final before the Dec 15th start date since I have completed all other work. The problem is the link to the final exam in all 4 classes has yet to be activated, and I've been told by one professor to contact tech support and another to "wait until TESC activates the link. It should be soon." -- I don't simply want to WAIT until TESC does something, but I want to find out when it's going to be activated. Problem is, I have no clue who to contact. When I submitted a ticket to a BA Advisor they said "it's up to your mentor if you can take the final early" - but never responded to my question of who activates the final exam link and when it will be activated. Frustration. So, my question is, does anyone know who I should call DIRECTLY to ask this question? Is it a departmental question or a tech support question?

Also, one other question. January is my last semester and since I am applying to graduate school and law school for Fall 09 admission, I MUST graduate in June -- otherwise my plans for the fall crumble. That means all of my mentors must have my final grades into the system before the April 1st deadline for June graduation. I have been assured by two different people in the registrars' office that as long as grades are submitted by April 1, I will be fine. I want to believe them, but knowing TESC something will go drastically wrong. Someone reassure me nothing will, or tell me who to contact to MAKE SURE nothing goes wrong. Also, when should I apply for graduation? Wait till the January semester start? I'm currently taking 18 credits and will also be taking 18 credits in the January semester, if that matters.

Thanks for your help!

  Thomas Edision Certificate Programs
Posted by: creationstory - 12-02-2008, 01:24 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (2)

I was talking to a person at Thomas Edison.
I was actually inquiring about the certificate programs. From what I understand, the certificate program such as

Thomas Edison State College | Undergraduate Certificate Programs

costs either $250 dollars or its for free if you're going for a BA at Thomas Edison State College. Nice tidbit for some of yall.

if you meet the requirements for for the certificates you can then receive it. the ones they have are

• Accounting
• Computer Information Systems
• E-Commerce
• Finance
• Human Resources Management
• Marketing
• Operations Management
• Public Administration

you don't have to be a finance major to get a certificate in finance. all you have to do is meet the requirements for it.

Is "Pass Your Class" CLEP prep a scam?
Posted by: Levi - 12-01-2008, 04:01 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (18)

Does anyone know anything about the CLEP prep company "Pass Your Class"?

I ordered the $40 package for the CLEP Principles of Microeconomics exam from PYC and found that the study guide contains only about 20-30 pages worth of information (certainly not worth $40!). I thought that surely there would be more info.

In fact, the PYC website (Pass Your Class - Pass Your Clep Tests - Guaranteed!) states that you only need to use their study materials to get a passing grade. They also guaranteed that if you used their materials and failed the CLEP test, they would refund your order (they claim a 98% pass rate for their customers). This doesn't seem possible considering the limited study prep they supply. I looked at the study guide reviews on Amazon.com and almost all of the reviewers gave the company only one or two stars.

If anyone could share their experiences with PYC, I think we would all benefit.

  American Lit Clep
Posted by: Namivie - 12-01-2008, 11:02 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (12)

I am studying for the American Literature Clep test. I'm reading the Idiot's Guide. I've read the test specific information, and it has me a little nervous. I've already taken & passed the analyzing & interpreting literature test, so I think I'll do ok on any questions that ask for analyzing. People have mentioned knowing literary devices - does anyone remember specific ones that I should know?

I'm interested in finding the pass your class study guides, but so far I haven't found where to get them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Any other preparation advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

  REA or Petersons's or both?
Posted by: jeff - 12-01-2008, 07:14 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

Hello all! I am new to the forum. It has been 30 years since I last cracked a textbook but getting a degree is something that I have been wanting to do for years. I found this forum and I am encouraged that maybe I can do this, even though I have never taken a CLEP test before. I signed up for InstantCert last week and have been studying the Intro to Sociology flashcards and reading the SparkNotes 101 Sociology book.

My question is how do you know when you are ready?

I have looked at the exam specific study area and most of you are using other resources in addition to IC. It seems that REA books and Peterson's practice test are used quite a bit.

Is it recommended that both be used for studying the material?

If you had to choose one over the other what would it be and why?

I see by the Peterson's web site that the practice tests are 19.99 for 90 days. Is that any number of practice tests for 90 days or only one particular subject area?

Sorry to ask so many questions in my first post, but I just want to make sure that I am utilizing my time and resources wisely.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Help me: What is Excelsior? Suggestions.
Posted by: blakenew - 12-01-2008, 12:39 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (6)

Hi.

I attend McNeese State University. I attended for awhile, acquired 9 hours of credit, then stopped attending the university for 2 years. I re-enrolled and I have taken 1 CLEP exam, English Composition, and passed it with a score of 61--CLEP'ing me out of both English 101 (61/50) and 201 (61/55). I did not study at all for the English Comp. CLEP exam. I need suggestions on more "easy" exams to take (preferrably ones that require little/no study).

I'm studying for Biology right now, hoping to get 6 more hours of credit.

I'm looking to pass as quickly as possible. I am a little behind right now.

Which brings me to..

What is Excelsior? I realize it's an online college. But how do you combine it with your current college? Does McNeese State University accept Excelsior credits? Would I pass through college a lot faster with it?

I'm trying to get as many of my credits out of the way as quickly as possible. I hope I pass Biology.

Blake

Help! South Africa independent study course needed ASAP!
Posted by: Julie S. - 11-30-2008, 09:19 PM - Forum: Off Topic - No Replies

Hello!

In just two days my son leaves for a 2 month visit to South Africa. He would like to put together a proposal for an independent study so he can get some credit for the trip. Last quarter he worked 40-50 hours a week to earn money to afford this trip, and was also enrolled as a full-time student at RIT. He was so busy he wasn't able to put together a course. Actually, he had some things done toward it, but the focus of his trip has now changed and he is unable to follow up with his original ideas. He has an anthropology teacher that is open to sponsoring his course if he can submit some kind of syllabus.

Because his plans are very open and free-flowing, he's having a hard time coming up with how to present an ind. study. He has a number of contacts that know he is coming and will contact them in-country to help with whatever volunteer work he can do. Some of the things he has planned include traveling to Zimbabwe with a wedding party (bride is S. African, groom is Zimbabwean), taking supplies to an AIDS orphanage and helping out there for awhile, working on a farm that is seeking to help develop sustainable communities in rural areas, studying race relations and reconciliation, networking with various churches and ministries to assess the needs of local populations, and visiting lots of South Africans as he endeavors to learn more about their culture and way of life.

Any ideas as to how to make this an "academically worthy" course? He enjoys reading and loves to write. Sorry this is so last minute - we've been out of town the past couple of weeks and haven't had a chance to research this much. By the way, he has clepped 3 courses and will do 2 more in the spring after he returns from S. Africa ;-)

Thanks for your help!
Julie
