DSST Test Center - NY, NJ, CT
Posted by: thatbrian - 12-04-2008, 10:45 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (10)

Anyone know of a DSST center in NY, NJ or CT that has less of a wait than a month? I'm having a tough time finding one. I live in CT, but am willing to drive a bit if I have to.

Thanks!

  I need some advice
Posted by: Lindagerr - 12-04-2008, 10:42 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (8)

 I have not been on the forum much for a while, mostly because I haven't been doing much about college for a while. I wasted 4 months of my last years TESC tuition and 1 month of this years just procrastinating.

I don't know if it is just because I am tired in general, because after all this time I am still not sure what I want to do when I grow up, or am I just lazy and now that the courses or test are goiing to take more work I just can't be bothered.

I have all the books and study guides I could want, but the thought of starting to study for Physics or Calculus is just putting me off.

I started to look into a FEMA course, but ir just seemed like too much reading.

I finally started to study for the Social Science and History CLEP I just can't decide if it will be as easy as it seems or I should just go take it.

Could it just be college burnout? My original goal was just to get my AA and be happy with that. Should I just say enough is enough and save my money to pay for my sons college.

Has anyone else ever slacked off for this long and gotten back into it?

  Easy CLEPS - My thoughts
Posted by: snofy - 12-04-2008, 07:13 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

I've taken a few CLEPs in the last few weeks and this forum has been a great help. Will like to share my experience, especially to those who will like to know which are the easier CLEPS.

English Composition without Essay

I selected this CLEP because most people were saying that this is one of the easiest ones and doesn't require much prep time. I studied the day before the exam, using mainly InstantCert, Peterson's and the official study guide. After going thru IC, I started with the official guide which was very easy. When I moved on to Peterson's, I was in a panic because the test was much harder than the study guide and it was already close to midnite after my first Peterson's test. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep that nite because of the final cramming and worrries.

The actual exam was much easier than Peterson's and I was able to answer most of the questions with ease. However, I only scored a 64, which was lower than I thought I would get. IC helped a lot by pointing out the grammatical areas to watch out for. Overall, this is quite an easy CLEP but definitely go in prepared at least with IC and one or two sample tests.

How many discussion forums are there on this website?

I just found (by accident) the Distance Learning Discussion Forum (Distance Learning Discussion Forums - Powered by vBulletin. Of course, I am very familiar with the CLEP forum, but I was wondering, are these the only two forums, or are there more?

What's the Worst online class you've taken?
Posted by: nicbon - 12-04-2008, 04:42 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (20)

Mine by far is Managerial Accounting from BYU.

1)The book was expensive and hardly has any solutions to problems in the back of the book. And if there is an answer, they don't show you how they got it.

2) The CD explaining the lessons is dreadful. The guys voice alone will put you to sleep and he talks fast and doesn't pause, making it that much harder to follow. You can print out notes for the lesson but they're hard to follow since they are abbreviations of him talking.

3) No review sheet or any kind of study guide for the tests. They just tell you to be able to do the CD problems.

4) Can't access the quizzes after you take them. They may think you are going to show them to others across the country, so they can cheat. Stupid.

5) Extremely anal about who procters their exam. I have to drive 45 miles to a Sylvan learning Center and pay $55 an hr.

6) Tests are overly difficult.

The software and everything else is just plain terrible. If other classes are like this than BYU has a long way to go with their distance education program.

Take this class elsewhere if you can.

  My First CLEP Exam
Posted by: Sowak777 - 12-04-2008, 04:05 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (7)

My First CLEP Exam

I took my first CLEP exam today. I am pursuing the B.A. in English degree from Thomas Edison State College, so I took the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exam first. Here is what I used to prepare:

1. http://www.guidancenet.com/testprep/code/bcaflame.asp

2. http://www.degreeforum.net/specific-...ture-clep.html

3. Amazon.com: CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Literature (REA) - The Best Test Prep for the CLEP (Test Preps): The Staff of REA: Books

I spent a total of about 20 hours studying the book and taking practice exams. The real exam was just like the practice exams online and in the REA book. Both resources are excellent and give a true feel for the real exam.

I took the exam at a local university. I studied for about an hour before I took the exam. For me, this was essential; it helped get my mind off other things and on literature, archaic English, and general test taking strategies. It all paid off; I got a 78/80. The person working at the assessment desk said it was the highest score she had ever seen on a CLEP test.

Next up: Humanities for 6 credits and Social Science and History for 6 credits! Big Grin

DSST Art of the Western World or CLEP Humanities
Posted by: lillyrosa - 12-04-2008, 02:40 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

I need to take one of the above. Does anybody have any suggestion as to which would be easier? I already have Gardner's text "Art through the Ages" and attempted to take an Art History class online but had to drop early in the term do to illness. I see that InstantCert does not provide flash cards for Art.

Thanks

Can someone give me the low down on the FEMA credits? Does TESC except them? Where do they fall into place?
