Calbright college, a free CBE online college in California has partnered with WGU to allow credit taken there to be transferred into degree programs.

If you're planning to go to WGU, take some free Calbright courses first to transfer in credits and save time on your degree. Calbright is completely free, competency-based, and fully online, so there's basically no downside to knocking out transferable coursework there before you start paying WGU tuition.

Yes, this is very similar to other programs available, such as the Coursera classes that can be taken free because the company, library, state, or whatever it may be will subsidize the fees. Calbright is only available for California residents, if you're in another state, look for similar options (cheap or free like the Coursera, EdX, Udacity, other MOOC options available).
