Shmoop ACE Plan Changes?
#21
Study.com used to be Education-Portal.com and I think it was a bit lengthy to type so they decided to change the name, I dunno, they may have bought the name and paid a huge price for it because someone parked it. I think Study.com sounds better than Education-Portal, and a lot easier to type! Short and sweet, directly related to what they are providing - Study, for college credit/test prep and all.

Shmoop University was a good plan but went too shmoopiness for my tastes, I mean if they focus on teaching rather than that shmoopiness it may have been a better run operation. At the end of the day, they're trying to do things "differently and affordable as possible", but the content and quality was lacking. Their name wasn't a factor I don't think.

Update: Oh and if you type education-portal.com, it directs to Study.com - LOL, I didn't know/notice that until I tried it again.

Shmoop is the worst name ever, the only thing they did well as providers is use "S" as the first letter of their name.

Main providers start with "S", Saylor, Sophia, Study, Straighterline... this is mandatory to be success in this industry.

In the other hand, i don't understand why they use the name Shmoop, this is pretty bad, i think for education more traditional name is better, to add the term "Academy" at the end of the name is also a good move, like Saylor Adademy.

In their website they write: Shmoop is a Yiddish term that means “to move something forward a bit.”

It is not bad, but most of people don't get the reference.

In the other hand, i just realized they totally change them website enviorment, it looks much better.

Hmm, that is an interesting statement.

I'm curious why you feel that Study.com seems more dubious as an alternative education provider than Shmoop? Shmoop sounds like a joke name to me... like someone lost a bet and was forced to use a name their 4-year-old came up with. On the other hand, Study.com sounds like a business focused on education... though it sounds more like a tutoring site than an alternative credit provider.

In any case, Study.com sounds far more legit and professional than Shmoop to me.

I agree. Study.com tells you exactly what the website is about - studying. Shmoop sounds like shampoo or some sort of prank involving a tv show and Ashton Kutcher. It sounds like something a toddler mumbles when learning how to speak. It tells you nothing about what it does. Sophia tells you in one of their courses - I think it was the first challenge of ethics. It's Latin. StraighterLine sounds something like you're now on the straight and narrow to completing your degree.

It's too bad they had a bunch of literature courses. But schools don't accept them anymore.

I guess if Yiddish vocabulary were more common knowledge the name would make sense. The good news is that we can complain about this at all. When I started college in the 90s there were little to no alternative credit providers. Today there are affordable options for every learning style.

Personally I generally do well on exams but I dislike short answer questions, especially when they are of the list five items variety. Sophia's open book tests are fantastic and low stress. SDC's exams can be made low stress when you nail the quizzes and can go into them only needing 55% to pass or even lower in courses with assignments.

I do not think I would like the 'here's a textbook' let us know when you are ready for the exam format.

Hi Shmooper,

You are currently enrolled in ACE Recommended Courses with Shmoop. Due to material changes in their transcription services, as of August 31, 2020 Shmoop will no longer be offering ACE Recommended Courses.

What this means:
You can submit transcript approvals to Shmoop for ACE Credit through August 31
After August 31 your Shmoop subscription will be discontinued
Why??
ACE has announced significant changes to their program this year, which have added complexities that make it infeasible for Shmoop to continue offering college courses.

Sounds like they are citing ACE's plan to move toward Acclaims and its free transcript service soon, and Shmoop is not integrating toward the new platform

1) Is anything like Shmoop in price and catalog of courses that is not Sophia, Study.com,SL, etc ?

2) Since they still have ACE accreditation if somebody takes a course from them and ask ACE will they granted or not? (even if later is imposible to transfer) because in the web still appear that some courses are ACE accredited.

Just because Shmoop has ACE accreditation doesn't mean a school accepts their courses. I don't know of any who accept Shmoop anymore.
