Over the last few months of the year, I've been reading MSN articles from Business Insider and CNBC Make It. Many people have gone from their dream jobs to being their own boss. I worked for NewsCorp from Dec 2000-May 2008, then IBM from June 2008 to Dec 2019, ultimately decided to go for many personal reasons...
Basically, I've been a consultant/contractor in business, education & IT for the last few years hovering around 80K, even though it's a pay cut from the near 100K I was making, I think there are trade offs, as long as you're alright with those trade offs, I think that's something to look into before jumping ship and making it on your own.
Work on your balanced mix/match trifecta of certs, degree, experience before deciding. Here's another couple of people who did something similar:
Link: I Landed a Dream Job at Apple and Left After 2 Years (businessinsider.com)
Link: I spent 6 years studying to become a chartered accountant. Then I gave it all up to become a soft-skills trainer. (msn.com)
Oh, and this guy travels 2 hours in the morning to work, and 2 hours back home! My goodness, I just can't go back to that... I love WFH too much!
Link: I supercommute through 4 states to get to work. I love earning a 6-figure NYC salary but living a suburban life in Delaware. (msn.com)
