jasminhusam Wrote:dcan ,now i know im not good at writing but i will study about this subject alot to improve my writing ,however i will try to report my process and im pretty sure it will be very poor to understand it hahaha ,thank you to many for your interesting

Actually, you are perfectly understandable! I think if you study capitalization and punctuation your writing will improve dramatically and quickly. Understanding when to use capital letters and when and how to use punctuation marks (periods, commas, etc.) will make your already understandable writing much better.

I really think you'll do fine on the test as long as you keep this attitude and just spend time focusing on the basics.

Hello Jasmin,
I think that a TOEFL or IELTS Prep course will help you a lot. This courses are heavy on grammar, reading and writing content. Practice as much as you can with one of these courses and you'll improve your communication theory and skills for sure. Trying to memorize all the grammar and writing rules makes it much harder.
You can Google " writing essays and papers" and you'll find dozens of useful material links.
Best wishes.

You may not have passed that test but I see much improvement in your writing since you first posted here. Many Americans are not good at spelling either(myself included). Your grammar is improving as Dcan said capitalization needs some work. I think you also might need some work on tenses. You are doing much better with English then I ever did after 5 years of middle and high school Spanish.

You are definitely getting better, but I also think you are getting overwhelmed. You are trying to go from learning the basics to college in a few weeks. I think you should step back and focus on the basics. Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation should come first.

Instead of trying to memorize rules, maybe you can try copying the way you see others writing. That way you learn the patterns the way you learned to speak. You developed an "ear" for what sounds right and what doesn't, so you can also develop an "eye" for what reads correctly and what doesn't. Also, realize much of the writing you see in forums online is very informal and would be thrown in the English professor's garbage, so it probably isn't the best to learn from.

You should also read books, magazines, and newspapers. A lot. They have to be edited in order to be published and should help give you the "eye" for reading and writing.

Ultimately you should look to move away from writing like this:

Quote:ok , its me again
i have two weeks studying and yesterday i tried the practice on the rea college composition official guide and my scoure was so bad it was 25%
but the good news i knew what is my weakness so am not good at spelling ,material research ,cities , modifier, vacubary and the big problem was on essay .

To writing more like this:

Quote:Hello, it's me again.

I have spent the past two weeks studying English composition. Yesterday I tried the practice test on the REA College Composition official guide and my score was very bad: 25%. The good news is I know what my weaknesses are. I am not good at spelling, material research, citations, modifiers, or vocabulary. The biggest problem was on the essay.

Yesterday I was in the library and tried to get some books on these subjects but I can't find any that are helpful. Do you have any suggestions for material that will help me with my weakness?

Thank you.

This is not the only way to "fix" your paragraphs, but it should give you an idea of the direction you should go.

I read a story years ago that Picasso's father made him draw according to specific rules, day after day, year after year. If he deviated one tiny bit his father made him start over. He said that because of that he knew the rules, and because he knew the rules he knew when he could break them. I don't know if it's a true story, but it certainly is true in writing.

By the way, I've written English all my life, and I was afraid of this test. It is a learning process for all of us, and we already know the language.

Open University based in Great Britian has some good courses for learn and acedemic English. Here are some links

They are from OpenLearn a free section of Open U and can be hard to find your way around.

deals with What sort of English do I need to study.

Am I ready to study in English?

I hope these are helpful! Depending on what country you are from watching TV from your country in English can be helpful.
example Iranian News at Press TV

Also find and listen to Voice of America in Special English Broadcasts
which has a special section for foreign students. The broadcasts are read slowly and words are spoken very clearly usually broadcast to Africa in the Evenings but can be accessed online at
Special English | Learning English

Or TV from the middle east
AJE - Al Jazeera English
also in good quality English.

We all learn language by hearing and seeing so the more interaction you have with ordinary american's daily is important. Joining a community center that works only in English and not your own language may help too! Watching American TV shows can be helpful for basic english too!
