Bachelor's in Health Science... Frustrated
#1
Hi everyone...

I recently posted a question about CollegePlus! asking if it was worth the cost to use their service or not. Most of the reviews I got said it's cheaper and less of a hassle to just plan it out, study, and CLEP without the program (just to do it yourself).

This week I have been reading through this forum a little and doing a bunch of reading on the TESC and Excelsior colleges to decide what I need to do. I want to go for a Bachelor's in Nutrition Science, and according to the ADA, TESC is accredited for that. I just have so many questions about this! None of my family has ever gone to college, so we have no idea what we're reading when we look at this stuff!

I see that TESC has a Bachelor's of Science in Health Sciences but I can't make out anything about what I need to do to get it!

I'm usually pretty good at planning things out, but this is really frustrating and confusing. What should I do? Has anyone done their Bachelor's of Science through CLEP testing that would have any advice?!

Some of my questions are:
Where do I start?
Do I need to enroll in a college before beginning testing?
What do I use to study for testing? Anything? Or are there specific sites/books/etc. recommended to use?
Can I get a BSHeS entirely through testing or does anyone know if I will need to attend some classes?
Is there a guide/general map for planning your degree out or do you have to make it up entirely based on credits for your degree?

HELP! (lol)

(P.S. Sorry if I seem really mad or upset, I'm just a little worked up after 3 1/2 hours of research and no headway! I probably should have waited until I settled down to write, but I didn't Wink )

Nope, you can test all you want and then get a transcript with the test scores to present to the college (Provided they accept xx amount of CLEP tests. TESC shouldn't be a problem, but some schools have limits, and the fact that this is done through a partnership may throw a wrench in the works)

REA Guides, COMEX Guides, and of course Instantcert and the forums.

Likely for a specialized degree like this, you'll have to attend classes. I did notice that the blurb for the degree talks about residency requirements. You'll definitely want to talk to an advisor there about that and find out what they require.

Usually there will be a pretty explicit list of what courses (if not what type of courses) you'll need for your degree.

My guess the best place to start would be to try and aquire as much detailed info about the program as possible (without getting wrangled into something that you may not want.) There may be other people on the forums that have experience with this course that can shed a little more light on it.

Good luck!

Edit
I just saw the credit distribution link at the bottom Thomas Edison State College | BSHeS Credit Distribution
You should be able to test out of sections I & III, but section II looks highly specific, and I'm not sure if there's any CLEPS/DSSTs that would cover those. It looks like section II is looking for 24 credits of prior health training as well, which may be an issue.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Wile E. Coyote, genius. I am not selling anything nor am I working my way through college, so let's get down to basics: you are a rabbit and I am going to eat you for supper. Now don't try to get away, I am more muscular, more cunning, faster and larger than you are, and I am a genius, while you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten, so I'll give you the customary two minutes to say your prayers.

Bachelor of Science in PsychoRabbitology degree
Master of Education with a specialty in Rabbit-specific destructive munitions (or eLearning & Technology, I forget which)
Doctor of Philosophy in Wile E. Leadership with an area of specialty in Acme Mind Expansion - 2017 Hopefully

Whoa, I have a few quesitons for you. First you mention an interest in a career in Nutrition then you ask about a degree in Health Science. Believe it or not, these are 2 different things.

A degree in nutrition (I believe there may be 2 different ones of these) but am not that knowledgeable in that. If you are talking about being a Registered Nutritionist at a Hospital you need to research that carefully and call around in your community to see if there are jobs available in that field.

This is not the same thing as getting an education in Culinary, which is more like cooking, with nutrition as part of it but no where near the same.

Generally people who have either nursing degrees already or persons who have experience (certifications) in what are known as allied health careers are those who go on to get a BS in Health Science. So they have a higher degree and can get into management or have the degree so they can go further as an educator.

So, the question is what do you really hope to accomplish?

If we know more we can help you better.

By the way EC has the Health Science degree and it can be accomplished online without a residence requirement. If I understand postings here correctly, if you register before the end of December they are waiving the registration fee for that degree track.

Who can confirm this?

TESC does not have an ADA apporved Nutrition Science BS degree for someone starting from scratch or out of state. What TESC offers is a degree for RDs (who already have BS degrees anyway- seems redundant) and only allows you to transer classes into them- they don't actually TEACH ANY of them. That is not the school for you.

If you want to become a dietitian, you need to attend a program that is ADA approved and it will require face to face attendance. Now, that said. Within the program you pick, you may be able to CLEP some of your gen eds (but not science!) and that will save you time and money. There are a few careers/college degree paths where very few short cuts exist, you are picking on of them!

There are a few programs that can be done online with local clinicals, but they are for people who already have BS degrees. Honestly, you will need to do a lot of homework and careful reading before you enroll anywhere. Please spend the next 3 months studying the requirements of becoming an RD and learning your options before you enroll somewhere.

College Plus is a waste of money. It's like hiring a travel agent to book your airline ticket.

I'm gonna have to go against the flow of this thread, cause I think College Plus is the best!!! I'm currently enrolled with them and I can't say enough good about it. First, you get an awesome coach who guides you through the whole process and really makes taking cleps easy. They also give you a completely customized degree template of all the courses you'll be taking. Another big one that no one is that they give you a bunch of speed reading and memory tools that can be extremely helpful for studying. There are tons of other pros to using college plus that you can find on their website, Collegeplus!.com.

The speed reading and memory tools can be purchased outside of CollegePlus. Many of CollegePlus's services can be done on your own -- the question is, do you have time and the willingness to do it? If not, CP is a great option.

Hi!

Learning the ins and outs of the college system can be challenging. Give yourself some time, you are new at this.

If you are sure you want to analyze the chemical contents of onions and not be cooking/sautÃing onions, I know that Kansas State offers several undergraduate degrees in the nutrition field:

Department of Human Nutrition

They also have many of their nutrition courses available through online learning:

Distance Education Courses
