BABA Upper Level vs Lower Level Courses
#1
My question is specific to the Business Administration degrees at UMPI.  I know that a minimum of 30 credit hours have to be earned at UMPI.  Of that 30 credit hours, how many have to be upper level and how many can be lower level?  Is there a minimum of upper level classes that must be taken?

30 Credits (10 courses) must be Upper Level. Any courses taken at UMPI that are LL will count towards your degree; however, they will not meet the 30 credits UL requirement at UMPI.

Is this confirmed or an assumption? I've seen quite a few degree plans that don't include 10 UL courses and several folks degree plans that come back from UMPI don't have 10 UL courses listed that have to be completed although it is always a total of 10 courses at minimum.

What you see in the forum and what is required are not always aligned due to some having plans without being enrolled or informed.

However, to assist here is a link and details shared on UMPI's website:

Residency Requirements

All four-year degree candidates must complete at least 30 credit hours of study through UMPI in order to receive a baccalaureate degree. At least 12 of these credits must be in the major and at least 9 of these 12 must be at the upper level (300-level or above).

Hopefully, this provides some clarity.

KSoul, yes that makes more sense now.  So you must complete 30 credit hours total and then so many must be in the major with the majority being upper level.

Just as long as you understand 30 credits must be UL, you are good to go. Many get confused between the wording of Major requirements and UL requirements.

In the end, best of luck with your degree.

I understand this as saying that of the 30 credits required for residency, you'd need to complete 9 UL at UMPI that are in your major.

This would leave 3 more credits to take at UMPI that are in you major (but not necessarily UL) and 18 more credits from UMPI that could be any course.

Ksoul,

When looking at the credit sources for transferring the first (ideally) 90 credit hours into the UMPI YourPace BABA Bachelor of Business Administration concentration in Management and Leadership, it looks like most users here recommend Sophia for lower level courses and either UMPI or Study.com for upper level courses. It looks like the one course that is definitely recommended to meet the LL lab science requirement is taking Biology 101L Intro to Biology with Lab course at Study.com as opposed to taking a science lab class at UMPI. The other recommended option looks like some of the lab science courses at ASU (i.e. Anatomy and Physiology)?

I am wondering if it is recommended to take the UL Business Core classes for the Mgmt and Leadership program at UMPI vs. Study.com? I see on some of the degree plans on this board that either SDC or UMPI is an option. Is it cheaper to take the UL Business courses at SDC vs. UMPI? Otherwise, my son was only looking at having SDC for about 1 month to complete the BIO101L course and then finishing the LL courses through Sophia and taking the remaining courses at UMPI.

I am wondering what the least expensive and easiest path is in taking SDC vs. UMPI courses especially at the UL in the Business Core or UL electives?

Thanks,

EducationSeeker

That is how I take it as well.  30 credits total.  12 in the major with a minimum of 9 of those being UL (300+) courses.  The one issue is that most of the UL courses required for the various majors aren't available elsewhere or they are more difficult at other places.  From what I understand Study.com courses can be a beast however UMPI courses are generally 1 test or 1 paper to get your grade.

Sophia is heavily recommended due to cost and ease minus the English 1 & 2 courses at Sophia, which are considerably longer than the UMPI options. This is why it is universally agreed upon in the forum to take English 1 & 2 at UMPI.

Science Lab historically has been suggested to use SDC (Biology + Lab) because it is more manageable than the confirmed brutal UMPI Biology course. However, Sophia has entered the building as a new option with their Intro to Chemistry and new Intro to Chemistry + Lab course that has been confirmed for transfer approval at UMPI. If you are already paying the membership, I would encourage your son to knock out those courses and Spanish 1 if he also needs the language requirement for UMPI.

Sophia, for the Science requirements, would be the least expensive. You have Environmental Science, Intro to Chemistry + Lab course that can be completed for $99 vs. SDC membership + Labster fee. As mentioned, if he needs the language requirement for $99, he can secure three essential requirements for UMPI.

Suppose he has already purchased the SDC membership and started the Biology course; in that case, I will encourage your son to take a UL course at SDC for his second course that can transfer into the M&L degree (you get two courses with your monthly membership).

I suggest courses at SDC with one assignment; it is easier to complete at UMPI if the SDC has two or three assignments.

Specific to the OP's question concerning the BABA, I am unaware of a LL option that would work; in addition, of a UL option that even makes sense as an easier route to take over UMPI.

I look forward to the OP succeeding with something different from those who have graduated. That is always fun when someone shakes up the cart with a new approach to completing their degree.
