Sophia and SDC Courses Have Been Gutted By UMPI
#1
So it seems those interested in doing the BABA are screwed. The degree is now not hackable. All of the SDC and SOPHIA business courses that satisfied major degree requirements will now only transfer to UMPI as Business electives.

This is very devastating to the people who were completing the BABA degrees. It sucks that this came without warning.

I am in the process of BA Psych and I have found only one of my classes has been affected (so far).

Here is the link to the transfer database to check your degree requirements by each course:

Interesting indeed, I quickly checked Saylor.org, Sophia.org, Study.com and StraighterLine, the 4 major ones I recommend... Saylor and StraighterLine doesn't seem to be affected by these changes, only Sophia.org and Study.com, I wonder why they made these changes...

I wouldn't be surprised if those also change in the coming days.

I believe this is a money grab.

UMPI is realizing they are losing money with their degrees being so hackable.

These Youtube videos calling their degrees "hackable" might be hurting their reputation as well.

I wouldn't be shocked if next the 10 course residency is raised from 30 credits to 60 credits.

This is the nail in the coffin for BABA degrees.

So far only 2 classes are affected for my BA Psych.

We will see what happens in the coming months.

MAT 101 is not longer accepted through Sophia (Basic Statistics). It is still showing for StraightLiner and SDC but that can change in the coming weeks.

This is a sad day for UMPI Yourpace students!

I am really disappointed. So much for my 2nd degree BABA after this BA in Psych.

I mean, don't you want to protect your degree's worth or do you want to get a degree from a known "hackable" school that anyone can complete in 3 months? Obviously, UMPI has some financial incentive as well.

FWIW I completed a UMPI history degree in 3 months, it required the bare minimum in work (unlike my previous in-person degrees).

So you benefited from the same system others will be now be shut out of and you are celebrating the gatekeeping because you have your degree already and the rest of us are getting screwed?

LOL I got the degree for fun, and it has nothing to do with my current and established career (healthcare). I also already hold a masters in the field of history, regardless.

I am sorry reality ruffles your jimmies (mod even had to edit your comment HAHAHAHAH), just calling a spade a spade.

No, I didn't benefit from any system; my first BS was 4.5 years in-person and extremely expensive. Try again. It behooves UMPI to up standards so their degree isn't seen as a joke. It requires a bit more work now (oh well),  stop being dramatic. Sorry, you can't get 2 four-year degrees in 6 months anymore...too bad. The entitlement is astounding.

Not a good time in the UMPI discord right now. My guess is there are gonna be a lot more people in BLS and other majors.
I wonder if more people will go through the UMPI challenge process or submit syllabi and petition for a different evaluation. That’s what I would do but who knows how long that would take or what caused these changes (I have a guess…)

It does look like UMPI still accepts Intro to Stats? SOPH 0005 Introduction to Statistics MAT 201 Probability & Statistics I. I don't think they ever accepted the foundation stats course.

GEC via Sophia looks fine. The only thing I'm not sure of is 1C Workplace Communication showing as BUS elective. However, the other courses still work so not an issue.

BABA PM: 13 courses required at UMPI (only looking at Sophia+Coursera)
BUS 150: Introduction to Financial Accounting *(now BUS elective)
BUS 200: Intermediate Business Computing
BUS 220: Managerial Accounting *(now BUS elective)
BUS 244: Management Information Systems
BUS 325: Financial Management
BUS 353: Legal & Ethical Environment of Business *(now BUS elective)
BUS 469: Strategic Professional Communication
BUS 141: Introduction to Project Management with Microsoft Projects *(now BUS elective)
BUS 240: Change Management
BUS 343: Project Risk & Cost Management
BUS 415: Operations Management Edit: *(now BUS elective)
BUS 401: Advanced Project Management Applications II
MAT 140: Mathematics for Business (I don't remember if Calculus can replace this)
  • BUS 150, BUS 244, MAT 140 (SDCM 0075, SDCM 0123, SDCM 0063) can be completed at Study.com but only Financial accounting is part of the new College Starter plan so not really worth it.
  • BUS 150, BUS 220, BUS 244, BUS 353, BUS 415 can be completed at Saylor Academy (SAYA 0021, SAYA 0009, SAYA 0013, SAYA 0047, SAYA 0038). The issue with Saylor is some of their courses need to be renewed via ACE and expired yesterday.
Expired, need renewal: BUS 150 (SAYA 0021), BUS 200 (SAYA 0047), BUS 415 (SAYA 0038)
Good to go: BUS 220 (SAYA 0009), BUS 244 (SAYA 0013)

So completing BUS 150 via CLEP (Financial Accounting scoring from 50 to 80), BUS 220 and BUS 244 via Saylor = additional $10 in fees = 10 courses remaining at UMPI. I still recommend completing ENG 1&2 at UMPI since it's so quick but 10 is still possible. It sucks but it definitely isn't "GUTTED" or "YOU GATEKEEPING HYPOCRITE" levels of change. I mean it doesn't seems like the BLS/BAS + other majors have been as affected by the change...
