Is anyone else disappointed by how lazy some of these YourPace courses are?
#1
Sad
I just need to vent a bit. And I also know why I am here.

I know none of us are here to expect Harvard, and most of us knew what we wanted and just want to get it over with and move on with ourlives. We all wanted accredited school, low cost, time-flexible, and man isn't UMPI yourpace sweet in that.

But man some of the courses I've finished felt like it was put together in one semi-drunk afternoon. The content was either a series of youtube link that was 7 years old, a link to a blog on either investopedia/betterup/atalassian. Like, thanks for choosing and vetting(which I admit has some real value) my youtube feed for me?

And also there is just broken content: In one of my liberal arts classes which I guess most people tranferred from Sophia,
we were supposed to analyze U.S. murder trends. There’s literally a slide that says "Chart" with a broken symbol of image where the graph is supposed to be. That’s it. No graph. Just “Chart.” It's one than one classes, and I stopped sending email to those instructors after the second one.

Okay now I feel better, and to be fair, not all classess are like this  I’ve had a few gems, like one of my accounting classes where the instructor actually gave incredibly thoughtful and detailed feedback. You could tell they cared and wanted us to learn something beyond just checking boxes. So it’s not hopeless—it’s just wildly inconsistent and lack a universal quality control.

Sorry for anyone who read this and I might wasted 45 seconds of your precious life. I just needed to vent and now I am already feeling better.

I totally get it.  In some of my first classes, we would have optional live sessions.  I always tried to attend.  Usually there would be 2-3 people show up.  Occasionally, it was just me. But I found some value in it.  I am going at a SLOW pace.  So, this has been gradually changing.  Now, there’s no live sessions.  We get videos and articles to read.  The discussion boards are CLEARLY a bunch of ChatGPT conversations.  You can tell some of these people don’t even look at what they are posting.   One classmates reference list included this: In [Course textbook title if available] .

I mean, seriously people???  So the students and teachers are both becoming lazier.

Oh really? There have been changes made probably. Many institutions have gone through growth or the reverse, a decline in enrollment. Some institutions close, others expand their offerings, it's a survival of the fittest or rather, the institutions that can get students to enroll and study. For staff, AI seems to be a big game changer in handling some of their work, it's just that some don't really know how to use it for best potential...

I was wondering which course has discussion boards except Bus 321 Human Resource Management? Are you talking about UMPI?

Yes I agree some courses are quite lame. But I always tell myself, you get what you pay for, so the course quality is fine with me, as I only want the degree.

Plenty of on campus programs have courses that are lacking. Sometimes professors are just there to collect a paycheck and their heart is not in it. Things at UMPI could be much worse. You could be stuck taking a course for 8, 10, or 15 weeks.

The use of AI is another. Some of the feedback/grading was definetly done by AI. I was like why shouldnt I also use AI just to get an easy pass

LOTS of professors use AI. Some colleges do encourage the use of AI by students with limitations on it. I've been in 2 programs on the grad level at 2 different universities where AI was encouraged but there are requirements to follow. It can be helpful at times. I mean I wouldn't use it to write a research paper but to research a topic to find the technical lingo needed to search the library it can be a great tool. Helping with sentence structure can be helpful but you have to be careful because it starts sounding like a robot wrote it if you use it too much. It makes for a great thesaurus!

Yes, as a new student, most definitely.

In fact I was shocked at the level of incompetence demonstrated in the course content for intermediate business computing.

I literally had no idea what the first assignments were asking for because it was worded like they outsourced it to a drunk freelancer from cantwriteistan.

I'm serious I had to get extra assistance to understand what the assignments actually Huh wanted and I'm pretty sure they didn't even clearly state anything to the effect of "this is your assignment" or give it an exact assignment prompt. Huh

At least it's easy. I also question the sort of people that are taking these programs because at this rate I would expect more criticism of the pedagogy.  Huh

Man I'm so glad I did this shit before ChatGPT! I also almost always skipped the discussion boards honestly.

I did come across a lot of broken links. Things break whjen image sources get taken down or articles get taken down. A lot of the time images and some content comes from a shared educational resource many schools use (UMPI, Brandman, UMass and some small colleges all used it). So they litterally just "import" the content that builds the class for them. It's from an accredited education provider. It's not much different then a school teacher buying lesson plans, or a department already having lesson plans.

UMPI is paying some folks to rebuild the classes, but this will take some time.

Sadly, a lot of the prompts are getting rewritten to try and be enough for a human to understand, but, able to trick ChatGPT. Way too many people are using it.
