Then I'd go to other supplemental resources: Google, Wikipedia, IC and SEF if available, video lectures. Then if I had practice tests I'd take one, and see what I needed to work on. Then I'd go back over those sections in the textbook, and also use supplemental resources. Right before the test, I'd skim the textbook or portions of it, however many times I could.
Several reasons I read the textbook:
-the test makers recommended that particular book
-I know from experience that tests done by colleges, especially UL ones, follow reccomended texts quite closely
-I'm just as upset as you all about the college textbook racket because you have to pay tons for the most recent edition, BUT
-I've always gotten a cheaper edition of the text by going one edition previous, and it's ALWAYS worked fine
