Help with degree plan for combined Math & Environmental Studies

Looking for a dual math and environmental degree from TESU or UMPI primarily.

Budget: Not a lot. I would prefer not to take out more loans, and want to do as much as possible with alternative credits. I have around $3K set aside, but will probably have more later. I'd like to go the cheapest route possible, but will consider spending more for easy and fast.

Commitments: Kids/spouse/pets 1 full time job and a sporadic part time gig.

Dedicated time to study:Between breaks at work and evenings/weekends, I can probably set aside 5-6 hours per week initially, possibly with more time freeing up depending on work.

Timeline: The sooner the better, ideally within a year.

I don't see Environmental Science at UMPI. The small amount of time available would also be a concern, since it's competency-based and writing intensive.

Environmental Science may not be the easiest degree to obtain - may require 2 terms at TESU based on prior posts. Here is an older post that may help you in planning for Environmental Studies: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid362435

For TESU, you are in good shape for RA credits, as well as general education requirements, if I reading correctly that is a 2nd Bachelors, since those and Electives will then be waived. Many of your missing requirements would be available via Sophia, Study.com and possibly onlinedegree.com. For Math, you need calculus, linear algebra and possibly statitiscs depending on how business statistics is brought in. It looks good for overall math credits needed.

The BA in Computer Science + Math may also be a good match based on your current credits.

UMPI might make its Environmental Studies minor and Mathematics minor available based on transfer credit, but you'd have to be taking a major from among the majors fully available through YourPace courses, or a BLS or BAS with a primary minor from among the minors fully available through YourPace courses.

Schools in our second tier – less optimized than UMPI and TESU, but more friendly than most schools to alt and transfer credit – which offer environmental science programs online, and some also mathematics, include Southern New Hampshire University, Wilmington University, American Public University System, and the University of Phoenix (which is likely to become an affiliate of the University of Idaho System in 2024). These could be useful for transfer credit even if you ultimately complete at TESU or UMPI.

"I already have a degree that is mostly unrelated to my field." And that's what we're waiting for... We don't know what this degree is yet, it's hard for us to recommend you any degrees from the UMPI BAS with any possible minors up to the TESU BA Environmental Studies & Math Majors... That one variable is the 'biggest' deciding factor (if it was for me). I'm even more inclined to inform you the Masters option if you have the prerequisites for something similar...

No that's an on campus degree, not offered on yourpace. There is no way to get an environmental science degree from UMPI unless you are on campus.


SOME colleges take ACE credits, most state school systems and well known private schools do NOT take them. The for profit schools, and UMPI, SNHU, WGU etc tend to take them

Since you have an IT degree and you're wanting to break into Environmental Studies & Math, have you looked at any graduate level options that don't require an undergrad in Environmental Studies or Math? That's what I would look for first, if that fails, then your best option would be the TESU BA double major for the cost, ease, speed to finish. I would recommend taking all the credits elsewhere and do a PLA for the upper level credits or classes you can't take elsewhere for cheap... You really need to research your options to see if completing it at TESU would be a better mix, or taking a little longer with other programs out there from different institutions, take into account the cost, ease, speed, and most importantly, transfer of alternative credits.

OSU and Idaho Online both are well known online unis and have MS in ES options. Strong programs as well.
