Study.com and Excelsior College

Excelsior and Charter Oak are less well represented as they are less popular destinations.

Just out of curiosity, why is there so much emphasis on TESU on this forum? Why are Charter Oak and Excelsior not as popular here? I guess I'm just trying to figure out that main draw to TESU here as opposed to the other two schools.

You know what's funny is that when I started on this forum about 8 years ago, EC was the dominant College on this forum that most people went to.  Hence one of the reasons I chose EC.  Now it's completely flip-flopped.

That would actually be my guess as well.  They are definitely the cheapest at this point, but I think the main issue is the length of time - 3 months for the cornerstone and then 3 months for the capstone.  But this is a guess, I'm not sure if this is how it works.  If you were able to complete the cornerstone more quickly, or take the capstone concurrently, then it would be a better option.

But once TESU enacts the 3cr cornerstone in July 2019, then the price starts to become an issue, and COSC will look a LOT better than they do even now.

EC used to give 30+ credits for the GRE subject tests. Too bad I missed that.

Plus, COSC also has the advantage of still taking FEMA credits. I found the FEMA courses were pretty interesting, and they are good options for free elective credits for COSC folks.

I still have about 12-15 FEMA credits I wasn't able to use after returning from my academic hiatus since TESU doesn't accept them anymore.

Returning to the original topic, I did find a section of EC's website on Study.com, but they still don't say anything about whether Study.com's upper-level courses count as upper-level credit with them:

On another note, it does look like a person can get some pretty nice discounts from EC from taking a few Study.com courses.

So, at least according to Study.com, EC does indeed accept Study.com courses for upper-level credit.

I think this was already well-known - EC generally goes by ACE recommendations.

Regarding the discount, the EC/Study.com discount only counts if you take at least 12cr through EC.  So, if you don't, then the costs revert back to full price.  The only thing you will save is the $50 application fee.

Here's the wording from EC's website:

Enrollment Fee: *Students who do not complete the required number of Excelsior course credits before graduation will be switched to the Multi-Source option and charged the Multi-Source enrollment fee of $1095.

Tuition (per credit): *Tuition per credit reverts to the non-partner rate if the student does not complete a minimum of twelve (12) Excelsior College online course credits.

Student Services Annual Fee: *Partnership students who do not complete at least six (6) Excelsior College online course credits each year will be charged a nominal $225 annual fee.

Graduation Fee: *The Enrollment and Graduation Fees revert to the non-partner rate if the student does not complete a minimum of twelve (12) Excelsior College online course credits prior to completion of a degree program.

In the event the graduation fee reverts to the non-partner rate, this fee will be reduced by $15 per academic credit for each undergraduate Excelsior College course successfully completed.

Excelsior applies credit almost exclusively based on ACE and NCCRS recommendations.  If evaluated by both, expect the credits to be applied at the lower level.   As for course equivalencies, I haven't seen those listed anywhere on their site.  I have no experience with Study.com, but other sources (Davar, Sophia, Straighterline & DSST) were applied as I expected.

Surely there's someone on this forum who has experience transferring courses from Study.com to Excelsior. Has anyone had any trouble transferring those courses? Did Excelsior award upper-level credit for those Study.com courses marked as upper-level?

I have transferred many credits into Excelsior. I have an amazing advisor that gets back to me very quickly. They approve upper and lower credits based on ACE recommendations. If I ask about one they haven't credited before they investigate it and it almost always works in my favor. I will be completing my BS in Healthcare managment in June through the school and it will have only taken me 22 months. I am learning a great deal from their classes. I think it is a great school. If you have any other question feel free to message me. You can also apply and once you have been accepted you can get your classes preapproved and transfer them in until you are ready to take classes there.
