Study.com and Excelsior College

My son is a junior in high school and is working on a bachelors in Human Resources Management. The goal is to graduate from high school and college at the same time. He has taken all the CLEPs and DSSTs he can towards his degree. Now we are kind of in uncharted territory and aren’t quite sure how to proceed. Next up are either UEXCELS, courses at Study.com, some other option or courses at Excelsior.

I’m trying to figure out what courses at study.com would satisfy his requirements both in terms of mapping properly and upper level credit. However, Excelsior isn’t much help in answering my questions and we don’t want to waste time or money completing stuff they won’t accept.

Does anyone have actual experience in how Excelsior accepts study.com courses? If so would these courses at study.com satisfy their requirements including upper level.

is he actually enrolled in Excelsior ?

if yes, then send a message to his adviser and get course approval

just message 2 or 3 courses at a time -- tell them
"I'd like to take 'STUDY.COM: Business 308: Globalization & International Management' to satisfy the requirement for 'International Business (3 credits) * Need Upper Level'"
you'll usually get a reply in 3 business days or less

then finish those courses and ask for permission for more

We applied but because he is under 18 he can’t enroll and therefore can’t get an advisor.

Surely there's someone on this forum who has experience transferring courses from Study.com to Excelsior. Has anyone had any trouble transferring those courses? Did Excelsior award upper-level credit for those Study.com courses marked as upper-level?

Excelsior and Charter Oak are less well represented as they are less popular destinations. Since they are less popular and we don't have many here posting their evaluations, we don't have people with encyclopedic knowledge of the course evaluations like we do with TESU. There are a few folks on here who post about their experiences now and then though there is no guarantee anyone has transferred any specific courses you may be interested in.

In general, it is my understanding that they follow the ACE recommendations pretty closely, so if a course is ACE recommended as UL credit then it should most likely come into Excelsior as UL as well. Though I know they will also occasionally take a LL recommended course as UL if it matches the content of an UL course in their catalog. The same applies to COSC as well. TESU doesn't do that anymore, they follow ACE pretty strictly these days.

Just out of curiosity, why is there so much emphasis on TESU on this forum? Why are Charter Oak and Excelsior not as popular here? I guess I'm just trying to figure out that main draw to TESU here as opposed to the other two schools.

I can't speak for others, but a big reason I opted for TESU is that it is much easier to find info on their site and therefore much less guess work in putting together a plan

The biggest reason WAS cost. TESU was the cheapest of the three because they only required a Capstone. Then they added the one credit cornerstone, and now they are going to be requiring a three credit cornerstone, same as the others. COSC and Excelsior also require more UL credit than TESU.

In short, the differences are getting smaller and depending on existing credits any of the three might turn out to be the best choice.
