Cheap credits in New Mexico, out of state too

I just thought i would pass along some interesting things I have rediscovered lately. A year ago Clovis CC was pretty prominant for really cheap distance learning options, I thought this had changed......but I discovered it isn't gone.

Most of the less prominant schools in NM will let out of state students take up to 6 credits online at or near the ridiculously low in state rate. Even Clovis is still a bargain but there are a few others to consider.....including UL options.

Luna CC might be the low cost leader at just $210 for 6 credits plus $25 per course in fee's. So, 6 credits at $260....not a whole lot more than taking a clep! Tuition Matrix

New Mexico Junior College appears to have an outstanding deal on full time attendance: 12 hours or more of tuition is said to have a "max cost" of $720 plus $16 per credit plus $40 a course. So 12 credits = 720+192+160=$1072 or $89 a credit. Thats an amazing deal in most locations! about half what I pay in Fla for in state tuition. Tuition and Fees - New Mexico Junior College They have a great selection of courses, and classes run in 8 or 16 week sessions. You can complete Eng 1 and 2 or Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 in a single semester if you like.....cool freaking deal! New Mexico Junior College - Distance Learning You can even break the tuition up over the semester in 4-5 payments. I can't help but feel this is how it should be. Why do other schools charge so much?

Perhaps the best secret is the Upper Level courses at WNMU and ENMU around $450 for 3 credits Online Some classes in such obscure topics as Aviation or Law....could be an affordable means to build a focus in or area of study. Heck, my Masters courses at WNMU in the MAIS are only about $1100 total for 6 credits, thats an entire MA for less than $7000 if the discount holds (boy I sure hope it does!).

I would really like to hear any info you guys have on this, the prices are just about too good to be true. I fear this may go away.....if starting out I would jump on it for the Spring semester and gobble up what i could.

There have been rumblings about these great deals going away- I suggest contacting the finance folks at the specific university and get something in writing as regards tuition, especially beyond Spring 2012.

I've taken science courses online with NMJC and thought they were great as well as a good financial value.

Yeah, I will be glad when they publish costs for next year. Still it seems its at least in part up to the individual institution if they are going to offer the deal or not. I get the impression some of these are struggling to keep enrollment up, so long as that persists it seems a good bet. I still don't understand how they keep their costs so low in the first place. Even the dorm rates and meal plans seem extremely economical.

NMJC is where my husband is currently attending, did you notice that the $720 fee is stated to be 12 "+" credits worth of classes... Well, I made sure my husband took advantage of that... and he actually was able to do one better, and request for the absolute maximum credits per semester of 24 credits to be taken... Since he is an 'A' student his adviser allowed the additional 2 courses...saving even more time and money... here is the cost of his tuition breakdown...

Internet course fee of $40 each = $320,
General Usage fee $16 per credit hour = $384
Out-of-State flat fee tuition for 12 or more credit hours = $720...

Totaling $1424... for 24 credit hours.

HA! that's $59.33 per credit hour.

That's phenomenal! I wondered if that was possible, almost makes me wish I needed some credits! lol

How is he doing with that workload? What classes did he take? I'm very curious to learn what he felt was a doable plan of attack...that's essentially a year of study in 16 weeks. Of course its only 12 credits per 12 weeks...that's busy as heck but sounds doable.

It actually was just happen-stance... I egged him on to take 18 credits his first 8 week term... it was a strain for him at times, but he did great!!! he got straight A's... so I said it's a shame you can't take any classes during the second half of the term... but encouraged him to just ask and see if he could take additional courses, so he did, and his adviser indicated that the absolute max per semester was 24 credits... and that since he was an exceptional student... that he would allow the additional 6 credits to be taken...

wow that is amazing. I am trying to take some pre-reqs for my master's program and today I found NMJC. At first, i couldnt believe their tuition so was very skeptical. But after some research, I found this is actually the best bet for a distance learning!
Is he still in school? Hope he had already finished and moved forward to another stage of life!
Questions for you:
( I did study the website quite thoroughly and know the answer. but still I wanted to make sure since this is to take prerequisites that needs to be done on time.)
1. Is this school accredited?
2. Do they give a letter grade that will be transferred to other American college/ universities?

They are Regionally Accredited. They may have some pass/fail classes but I doubt it...they are a very traditional CC.
