Finally Got My First Score Back
Posted by: Basket Weaver - 07-26-2006, 11:39 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (18)

I took ECE's Ethics: Theory and Practice on 28 June and finally got the score: a "B" It is great to get another under the belt. I'm still waiting on 3 other scores on tests I've already taken. I also took the Dantes Ethics in America 2 days before this but haven't received the score yet. I used the same IC guide to study for both of these; logic would dictate that if I passed the upper level I should have passed the other. I'll have to be patient and see how that theory works out.

I have 10 more to go, 7 UL and 3 LL. Wish me luck.........Lee

I would like to get practice tests for this clep. Either a peterson or an official clep practice test would be great. The only problem is that I am abroad and It is very hard for me to buy any books here. This is one of the reasons instantcert is such a big help for me. Anyone has any suggestions about practice tests for this clep. Thankx alot.Smile

  Abnormal Psychology
Posted by: beckysharp - 07-25-2006, 10:19 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (7)

Here's my notes about this exam and how to prepare.

I read the Harper Collins College Outline Series Abnormal Psychology. It wasn't the best source, but it gave me a good foundation and it was cheap. The guided learning package for this course with exam fees is over $400.00. My text was $5.00.

SparkCharts Abnormal Psychology

The best information I picked up at The Excelsior Peer network.( I steal better than I create.)

Know the five paradigms:everthing hinges on these. Psychoanalytic, Biological, Behavioral-Cognitive, Humanistic and Environmental.
Also, the treatments associated with each. A Cognitive treatment might be changing your thinking about a phobia, a Behavioral treatment might consist of "flooding" and a Psychoanalytical treatment would tie the phobia to an unconcious conflict.

Need to know legal rulings and how they've been applied : McNaghten and Durham.

Know who Kaplan, Dix, Rush, Kraeplin, Ellis, Rogers, Mesmer, Charcot, Bleuer are and what they are known for.

Know the difference between schizoid, schizotypal, and the three forms of schizophrenia. Schizoid and Schizotypal have nothing to do with Schizophrenia.

Know the Personality Disorders and each category they belong to.

Be familiar with sexual dysfunction and paraphillas.

Freud- id, ego and superego, unconcious conflicts.

Review autism, learning disabilities, mental retardation

Different forms of IQ, personality and neurological tests.

Know somaform, psychogenic, dissociative.

Know the diathesis stress model and reliability, validity in experiments and testing.

Know the DSM categories-the five Axis- Clinical, Personality, General Medical, Environmental, Overall Functioning.
Also, why some feel these categories are complete and exact and others feeling they are inadequate and stigmifying.

I used these practice exams and looked up everything I didn't recognize. Excelsior recommends the 9th edition of the Wiley book, but the Student companion sites have 15 to 30 questions per chapter for editions 8, 9 and 10. That's all the practice questions you'll need.

http://bcs.wiley.com/he-bcs/Books?action...bcsId=1638
http://bcs.wiley.com/he-bcs/Books?action...bcsId=3057
From wiley.com Higher Education Site, then go to Student Companion site

These three books have a treasure trove of chapter summaries, powerpoint files, practice quizzes, web links. (in some places, I had to sign in with my name and school, but no problems getting in.

Best of luck.

  Analyzing & Interpreting Lit
Posted by: B2MANLEY - 07-24-2006, 08:44 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (11)

I wanted to get some of your opinions. I have been studying for US History I and have scheduled the test for Friday (5 days away). In reading through some posts, it seems to be that many of you feel that the CLEP A&I Lit. exam is fairly easy to pass with minimal amounts of preparation.

My questions is this - Do you feel that if I study a couple of hours a day for the next 4 days I SHOULD be able to pass the A&I Lit. exam? I am trying to knock out a bunch of elective credits, and 6 credits would be a big boost. I feel like I could prepare for it in the given time, as I just took ENG112 in my traditional college classroom, and we did a great deal of A&I Lit. I have also confirmed that it does not conflict with ENG112. I would love to walk out of there with 9 total credits!!!

What are your opinions? Also, I have a few study materials, but any recommendations are welcomed.

Thanks in advance!!!

I did it...didn't think so, but I did
Posted by: 50fingersntoes - 07-23-2006, 11:08 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (6)

I had a really awful morning the day of my Ethics in America Test and thought 1/2 way through the exam I made a big mistake by taking it and should have really walked out the door instead of taking the exam. I got my result back yesterday(after only 2 wks) and I received a 53!!

I also received my Drug and Alcohol exam back last week and received a 51.

I am so flipping excited. Have taken a week off of studying for Vacation Bible school, getting ready for the kids to go back to school and PTA stuff(President here:confused: ) and now am running forward on Intro to Computers and Information Systems and Computer Applications hopefully taking them next week. WISH ME LUCK!! That will be 2 more classes down and ONLY 11 more exams to go!!!!!!!!!!!Cool

  P*ssed off at UoP!!!
Posted by: AKay - 07-23-2006, 12:56 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (34)

*Begin Rant*

Sooo I passed my intro to sociology clep which my academic counselor said would be good for the 3 credits im deficient in lower levels for social sciences.
Great! Im thinking i will only need the 3 for physical sciences and intended on taking that August 1st.
Well I look and the credits were not applied apparently its duplication of credit from my transfer credits with a sociology 101 class i took in 1996. so now i have to appeal or take another clep test which im prepared to do. But guess what UoP did? they register me for my next class which is a social science class and my class after that is my physical science class. I guess they dont want to lose the 1400 a freaking class! I will have to pay them. not to mention the numerous papers and presentations I will be forced to do. *End Rant*

I have left numerous voicemails today, expressing my discontent over this. I am not paying for these 2 classes. I am prepared to transfer to UoPs online campus or to Excelsior but i dont know if i will meet my graduation date of April 31st 2007 so I can apply for grad school before thier deadlines(may31st, june1st).

My questions are which 2 cleps are easiest to satisfy the 3 social science credits and 3 physical science credits i need(keep in mind the problem i have with the intro to soc clep)

Also what are the odds that i can transfer to excelsior and still finish by April 31st?

im soooo sad, frustrated, disheartened and flat out P*ssed!!
arghhhhH!!
Sorry guys.

Will IC Offer CLEP English Lit Flashcards Soon?
Posted by: learningasIgo - 07-22-2006, 10:07 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (11)

I have now taken all eleven CLEP/DSST exams that I originally intended. Unfortunately, I failed one of them--the English Lit. CLEP exam--and only by one point!!! I think I would have rather failed it by five or ten points. Knowing that one single point made the difference between passing or having to restudy and wait to retake it six months later is a real drag!

I studied hard for that test, but it covers such a broad timeframe, it is difficult to nail down what needs to be studied. Since IC doesn't offer it, I was on my own when it came time to study for that one. IC has helped me pass all ten of the other exams (even Natural Sciences), so I imagine that it would have helped me pass English Lit as well.

I will be able to retake the exam in late September, so I was wondering if IC was going to be launching new test prep material for the English Lit CLEP soon.

  New to the Forum....
Posted by: Dakota - 07-22-2006, 06:25 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (9)

Hi,

Although this is my first posting to the forum, I am no stranger to IC. I have taken and passed 8 exams over the past 2 years, all with the help of IC. I just took (and passed) by Principles of Accounting CLEP yesterday. Before that, I had not used IC since last fall.

I am a big fan of IC and it has helped me test out of a lot of classes that I otherwise would have taken as part of my traditional coursework. With the exception of Principles of Accounting, I used IC exclusively to study for all 8 of the exams I have taken. I decided to take Accounting I through a traditional class and then take the CLEP so I would not have to take Accounting II. For me, this worked well because some of the accounting concepts were not easy for me to grasp with IC alone.

I have been following this forum for the last month or two and I have found a lot of great information here, especially regarding tips for specific exams.

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to participate here!

  GRE Psychology anyone?
Posted by: Johanna - 07-22-2006, 12:45 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (7)

With the benefit of up to 30 credits (including 18 UL) for a mere 130 dollars or so, I am seriously looking into taking GRE psychology. However . . . I would love to know if anyone else has done this and is willing to share experiences (good or bad). Is it even a reasonable goal?
Thanks . . .

  Latin honors at Excelsior
Posted by: hunter2115 - 07-22-2006, 11:40 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

Does anyone know how Excelsior's latin honors system works? I'm wondering about the cut-off GPA's of each and what requirements they have with regard to how many credits have to come from Excelsior directly thru exams and courses. Not a big deal to me, but it does give something to strive for.
