  Coming Home!
Posted by: larry7crys - 11-13-2008, 09:45 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (4)

Hello everybody! It's been quite some time since I've been on this site, let alone some down time for me to blow off some steam. If you didn't know, I am currently on a Western Pacific Deployment (usually 6 months long) and am at our last port in Japan. I'll be home before the holidays and I can finally see my wife and my dogs! I'm soo excited I can barely wait. See you in San Diego in December. Big Grin

  Excelsior Evaluation - Advice please
Posted by: cde - 11-13-2008, 01:56 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (3)

Hi,
I thought I would get the board's advice. You guys are great at this stuff.Big Grin
I have a dilemma.
I got my unofficial evulaltion from Excelsior for a liberal studies degree. I need a math/science 6 credits/quantative requirement, an upper division arts and science, a depth in the arts and sciences and the info lit. requirement.

I am almost done my math requirement from Aleks so that will solve the quantitative requirement and 3 credits of the math/science. I am still trying to decide on the easiest science. I am leaning toward Race to save the planet just on the grounds I feel I have some background on it or at least more then astronomySmile. Although if anyone has a great argument in favor of astronomy, I am willing to listen.

My problem is my second depth. I have 4 or possibly 5 classes I have taken in English at my previous schools so that should fill out most of it. That seems my best bet, since history and psy. I have just 2 classes each and philosophy -3 classes.

But I need 1 upper division in the 2nd depth, I believe, but that would also resolve the upper division arts and science requirement. What would be the cheapest way to do an upper level english class? Is there a way besides the GRE to test out of it, cheaply? I question myself pulling off enough points to get upper level. Excelsior testing seems expensive.

Or should I test myself out doing two history classes to resolve my 2nd depth problem? I would prefer history over psychology.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I took a practice test in the REA book and with there conversion charts i got a 67 raw score which is scaled to a 59 Scaled score. Does this reflect what my mark will be on the real clep? if it is by a point or two do i have a good chance at passing?
please help!! thanx!

  Best Online College Algebra class?
Posted by: Professor_Adam - 11-12-2008, 10:43 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (86)

Hey everyone,
I want to be able to teach someday in Texas. In order to do that I have to have College Algebra. I took College Math for my bachelor's. The algebra class is just something I need to knock out on the side in my spare time while I'm in Iraq. EC is too expenisve just for that one course.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Hopefully a school where I can just take that one course and be done with it? Thanks.

  Which exam should I take?
Posted by: ImRaddDuhhh - 11-12-2008, 08:18 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

I am going to need a 6 credit for social sciences.

The three tests I am thinking about taking are: American Government CLEP, Psychology CLEP, and Human Geography DSST.

Which are easiest? Which won't require as much studying?

TESC BA in English Degree: I need some help from a graduate or someone enrolled...

Thomas Edison State College | BA in English Credit Distribution

Does anyone know if the American Literature CLEP will count as the Survey of Literature requirement? Will the British Literature CLEP count as the nonwestern requirement?

A. Required Courses 12
* Survey of Literature I & II (6)
* Analysis and Interpretation of Literature (3)
* Nonwestern Literature (3)

If anyone out there has completed this degree, would you tell me how you fulfilled the English specific requirements?

Could anyone confirm that the below information is true?

All of the requirements can be met with CLEP exams.*
Survey of Lit I & II (American Literature CLEP for 6 credits- use idiot's guide)
Analysis and Interp. Lit (A & L CLEP 6 credits, a 3 credit surplus)
NonWestern Lit (Brit Lit CLEP 6 credits, a 3 credit surplus)

  Biology in a day
Posted by: Laconic - 11-12-2008, 07:40 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (15)

I found out Tuesday morning that I would either need to take eight hours of lab science courses next summer or pass the Biology CLEP test to graduate, with the deadline to CLEP being Saturday. My testing site only offers testing sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, so effectively it left me with twenty-four hours to prepare for a test. I figured the financial risk of attempting a CLEP test was worth not having to pay for eight whole credit hours, so I tried it.

I used IC, Wikipedia, and took one of the Peterson practice tests. I hadn't had Biology or chemistry (as the subject includes some basic chemistry) since high school (eight years ago). I started studying at 2:30 yesterday afternoon and went in to take the test at 2:00 today, and passed with a 63. I'd been reading threads on this forum, and heard people say how daunting the Bio test is (they weren't kidding), and wanted to say that it is possible to pass it on a day's notice, though I wouldn't recommend it. I've got good cramming skills and good instincts when it comes to taking tests, and I was still sweating it when I pushed "Show My Score."

My advice to anyone taking a test for the first time is to be confident. IC was merciless to study. Just when I thought I'd figured out where it was going, it would change everything up and throw something unexpected at me, and it was hard to keep my spirits up, but I did better when I felt like I had a handle on the material (even if I still didn't know what it was talking about!). Go into the test with no doubts that you are going to pass it, answer every question like you're sure you're right, and you'll come out just fine.

  New here..
Posted by: Kiran - 11-12-2008, 05:34 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

Hi,

I'm new here and looking at all the previous posts a little overwhelmed. I am planning to give my CLEP exam in English Composition with Essay. I would like to know if I need to go through any other material other than the Official study guide and also how many weeks of preparation is sufficient to clear the English CLEP.

Thanks,
Kiran.
