  Spanish - Sophia Failed
Posted by: kakasahib - 05-31-2024, 03:56 PM - Forum: Saylor.org, Straighterline, Study.com, Sophia.Org, Coursera Discussion - Replies (4)

Hello Everyone,
I am in need of ACE (3 Credits) for Spanish to transfer to UMPI. I signed up for Sophia and i tried the a milestone writing and failed miserably, I did the milestone 2.1 writing and failed as well. My current score is 76% with still 3 oral and 1 writing toushstones pending. Teacher stated that i used some outside help and never used the vocabulary that she mentioned. SHe is right, i didn't use google translator but other language translator.
Any help and suggestion is appreciated. I must transfer these credits to UMPI by June 15 or i will get considered fail since their Spanish course is way tougher that Sophia.
Any suggestion or help,
Thanks

  Confused about UMPI 2nd degree
Posted by: elment - 05-31-2024, 02:21 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (21)

I'm just curious and can't seem to find a simple answer. Does UMPI let you complete a degree and then enroll again for a 2nd separate degree, or is that not allowed?

  UNED Spanish online university
Posted by: Avidreader - 05-31-2024, 01:40 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

I am really quite impressed by the amount of courses being offered. There's very few English language courses which is why I believe it isn't being talked about a lot here.
But for example, they offer online language courses in languages that are usually insanely hard to find online such as Basque or Galician.
There's a very, very long list of título oficial masters online for only 180 euros worth a variable amount of credits on various subjects including history, Spanish law, psychology, and even a Chemisty course that looks awesome.
I don't see a lot of literature offering outside of a female poets course in their open university masters section, but there will be some interesting anthropology courses next year. Also have Roman military history courses.
Right now they have class signups for the summer session, everything on zoom and worth 1 credit each. There's quite a few history and literature courses for variable fees. I even spotted one for only 10 euros. A scant few are even free!
There are also a few advanced Spanish grammar courses. So, for people needing an online Spanish bachelors from TESU, this univesity might offer the credits that are so difficult to obtain elsewhere.
Here is the website in case anyone is interested.

  Next Steps for Bachelors
Posted by: liz0814 - 05-31-2024, 12:51 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (8)

I have come to the point where I need to decide where to go to complete my bachelors. I was at the local community college, and ready to transfer to a university here in KS (FHSU), but I really want to accelerate my path. I have started the application process at WGU, with a current start date of September, and wasn't thrilled with my transfer eval (18 units awarded) and while researching some Sophia classes, came across UMPI and now I just don't know what route to take. I am wondering if it seems reasonable to crank out some Sophia credits (maybe Study.com, too), start UMPI in September, and finish within a year (or less, I'd be totally fine with that!). I'm struggling to figure out which classes will transfer for what, besides the obvious ones, in order to determine what to take through Sophia.

Your Location: currently in Kansas, but a FL resident (military spouse)
Your Age: 35
What kind of degree do you want?: I was planning to do Sociology at FHSU, swapped to Middle Grade Mathematics Teaching at WGU, and now am considering Psychology at UMPI. My ultimate goal is to get my Master's in School Counseling, which doesn't require any specific bachelor's degree, hence the range of different paths.
Budget: As low as possible. I haven't paid anything out of pocket yet thanks to FA and a small scholarship, and would like to maintain a similar trend in order to afford the Masters program.
Commitments: I am a stay-at-home mom but my kids are all school-aged. So just that, my spouse and pets.
Dedicated Time to Study: I typically commit to schoolwork from 9-2 M-F but can find an extra hour or two here or there throughout the week. (25+ hours a week).
Timeline: ASAP, one year if possible.
TA/Employer Reimbursement: None, though I qualify for FA.
Current Regional Accredited Credits:
University of South Florida (19):
A&P I, 3, C
A&P I Lab, 3, F
English 1, 3, B
Intro to Sociology, 3, C
Origins: Big Bang to Ice Age (Geology), 3, D
Introduction to Oceanography, 3, B
World Geography, 4, C

Barton Community College (33):
Computer Concepts and Applications, 3, A
Interpersonal Communication, 3, A
Basic Nutrition, 3, A
College Algebra, 3, A
Introduction to Counseling, 3, A
English II, 3, A
Physical Geology, 3, A
Physical Geology Lab, 1, A
Psychology of Serial Killers, 3, A
Spanish I, 5, A
Contemporary Social Problems, 3, A

Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits:  None

Any certifications or military experience? None

So grateful for all of the information shared here! Thank you to everyone who dedicates their time to helping others!!

Doesn't UMPI Waive GERs for a 2nd bachelors?
Posted by: Whitepines - 05-31-2024, 09:46 AM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (4)

I was under the impression that the GERs were waived. But their evaluation of my first bachelors and all the additional classes I've taken came back with needing all my English classes and biology. I was super English heavy with my first degree so that's just weird. I was thinking about going for a 2nd RA psych bachelors after finishing my Masters in Nonprofit Management just because I've always wanted to learn more psychology, but I am not feeling English 101 again. Maybe my one RA and my one unaccredited  bachelors are enough undergrad learning...

Once I get a couple shots. I just don't know how to stop. Then I start acting like I'm Morgan on the rooftop.

Broadway ain't the place the go. Mixing Jack up with the Coke. Then everything my mama told me is out of the window.

  University of Lynchburg Transformation
Posted by: Charles Fout - 05-31-2024, 08:38 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

I hate seeing any legitimate institution suffer for any reason.

I wonder:
1. Does every tertiary institution of learning have to call itself a university?
2. What is the right amount of programs of study?
3. At what point does the tertiary education market place become oversaturated? The Commonwealth of Virginia and the greater Lynchburg area itself are a case in point.
4. Will the number of distance learning only tertiary institutions displace the number of traditional bricks and mortar ones.

I'm praying for and wishing the best for everyone involved with the University of Lynchburg.

Path for - Com Sci Masters then Doc
Posted by: EDUxplorer - 05-30-2024, 09:38 PM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (12)

Hello DegreeForum! I want to thank everyone here for your love and support you give the community. I was here about 18 months ago seeking advice for my daughter and it made a world of difference. Thus now at the next stage in her journey, I am back to explore options.

She has completed with honors 2x B.Sci degrees.

She would like to do a Masters in Cyber Security then a Doctorate in Computer Science, if possible.

She is planning to do Harvard Extension School's Masters for Com Sci, but I don't think this will qualify her for any doctorate programs, but if it does then that would be a huge win!

She is 19 and wanting to complete these as quickly as possible and on the best budget possible. Anyone have some possible ideas and suggestions?

Again, thank you all SO MUCH!

  Prior Learning Art Portfolio Assessment
Posted by: 3ichael7ambert - 05-30-2024, 03:21 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (18)

I have 190 credits, I already have my BOG and am going theUMPI route.

I’ve been in contact with all of my local community colleges, and they offer PLA prior learning assessments.
I started my academic journey at a private art school 15 years ago so I have my freshman, credits, out-of-the-way.
Despite having so many credits if I ever want to finish it up, I’m still a freshman at an art school. And all the methods to get cheap credit don’t really offer art credits (saylor, study, Sophia)

If it’s helpful for you to get an idea here is my design résumé
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1no-BdhORTq8Z4IUiVF8hhIerqDxA7ozZHN8Ri-QeY84

so I’ve contacted all the community colleges and I can do a portfolio review, but I would have to do a residency and I have so many credits that it doesn’t exactly make sense. Again this is at  the associates level.

Knowing all that what advice do you have.
I would like to knock out some color theory typography ace or NCCRS credits if you know of any, or if I could go through portfolio reviews, tell him give me to the senior level somewhere.

Is UMPI a good fit for my case?
Posted by: qtekia - 05-30-2024, 07:29 AM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (4)

Hey all,
I've been lurking, reading, wrestling and trying to figure out if UMPI is better for me than EU to complete my degree. I have to leave my current online degree program because they are winding it down. I have no problem with writing, am very disciplined, generally am able to study as much as I need but I am dyslexic. I have reading/writing software to assist me.

At first I was convinced that EU was the better match because I could get the rest of my LL credits from Sophia and add in the UL from wherever, but after reading on both boards, I'm wondering if UMPI isn't a better match. I'm not thrilled that EU has added that extra fee for TF after admission and I will def. be subject to that fee. Even though I'm not afraid, necessarily, of the capstone, I'm not certain. The language requirements from UMPI seem more daunting than the capstone tbh cuz of the dyslexia. I get that I have to make that decision for myself if the dyslexia is a bigger factor for me with languages.

Feedback would be great as well as some direction on how to proceed with getting the requisite "gen ed" for UMPI if that's the one I'm committing to. I think I am ONLY missing 1 math, 1 ethics, 2 sciences (Biology w/lab, environ. sci.) but am unsure if I need the visual communication or the US govt (all from Sophia). But maybe I am not reading UMPI requirements correctly. Then add the language courses (need 6).

However, with EU I would need quite a bit more to get to the 113. Although it's only another month or two with Sophia it's paying for more UL through some other platform which I'm loathe to do.

And yes, there are credits which will need evaluation from NACES, so I don't want to test out which uni will give me a better combo because, again, more money out of pocket.

Thanks in advance for your help!
