I don't know if this has been posted on here but the IBM certs are now part of Coursera Plus. Previously you had to pay separately for them.

Coursera's also running a 40% off offer right now: https://www.coursera.org/courseraplus/sp...toffannual

Best cheap Associate of Arts degree?
Posted by: System360 - 06-05-2024, 01:56 PM - Forum: Associates Degrees Discussion - Replies (7)

I've been exploring various options for getting my education degree, and I got the Pierpont BOG AAS. In addition to other options, I was considering doing my local community college's Bachelors of Education because of how cheap it is. It would take longer than WGU or UMPI, but in the long run it would probably be better for me personally. Unfortunately, they require an AA instead of an AAS, and they said I can't finish my AA at the community college because I fulfilled too many of the requirements and I can't take classes for my residency that aren't required. I didn't know this, and I don't know what to make of it. Are there any other AA programs online that are cheap and I could finish in a few months?

  CIS degree/transcript question
Posted by: charfife - 06-05-2024, 01:17 PM - Forum: TESU - Thomas Edison State University Discussion - Replies (10)

Hello,

I have a question about the CIS degree at TESU and I'm hoping someone can clear it up for me. I know it recently changed to BS in CIS from BSBA in CIS. For my purposes, a technical-sounding degree would be more beneficial than a business-sounding one. Has anyone graduated with the updated degree plan to know how it is listed on your transcript? Is it just Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, without any mention of business administration?

I appreciate any help you all can provide!

Degree Planning - Choice Selection Help
Posted by: Kjnova - 06-05-2024, 12:28 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (20)

I am not sure where to ask this question. This thread seems like it might fit, but apologies if not.

I completed ~120 credit hours at NCSU from 1989 to 1993 without graduating. I switched majors, and had a few missing requirements at the time. I got a job that led to me moving out of state. In 2010/2011, I was readmitted with a plan to finish my degree online, but had a major work event (ie my division was eliminated so I lost my job) that caused me to lose focus on the online classes and flunk out.

Recently, I reapplied and was admitted for a third time. I need five academic classes (most of which are very specific) and a one-credit physical fitness type class to graduate. If I meet these requirements, I will have BA in English Literature from NCSU.

I can take up to 15 credits elsewhere and transfer them in. I do need to take one NCSU class in my final semester for a residency requirement. Specifically, I need to complete 45 of my final 30 credits at NCSU, and currently, all of my credits are from NCSU.

However, I have had a lot of trouble finding self-paced courses that would transfer in, so for my ~16 credit hours I need, I am looking at two problems. One is that I have to wait for specific upper level classes to be offered. They are generally not offered every semester. (Think: 16th Century British Literature Other Than Novel, stuff like that.)

Even when I have found classes that look to me like they should transfer in - for example, Jazz History at UW-Flex transferring in as NCSU Jazz History - NCSU has said they would not accept it as transfer credit, for whatever reason. I speculate that they refuse to accept self-paced credit even from regionally accredited universities.

The second problem is that NCSU does have online classes, but every class is not online, and the online classes are sometimes synchronous, sometimes asynchronous, but never self-paced. So realistically, I am looking at being tied up at dinnertime every night until May, when I could probably graduate.

I might do that ... ultimately, it may be a small price to pay.

However, it leads to me wondering, would I be better off getting a bachelor's degree in business from a school with less brand awareness? For example, UMPI.

This would require more credit hours (30+ instead of ~16), but it might be faster anyway, because of the self-paced nature of the classes.

My career is in business - specifically, IT product management/program management. So, a business administration degree makes more sense from that standpoint. English Literature isn't what I would choose today. It is what I chose way back when.

NCSU isn't Harvard, but it is tied for #60 right now on the USN&WR list of top national schools, for what it is worth. It is a major research university, and the largest university in North Carolina.

I guess my question amounts to, all else being equal, should I choose the higher profile school, or the degree that seems like a better fit for my established career path? This might be one of those questions that it's impossible to truly answer, but I'm interested in other opinions. I don't have anybody with an informed perspective of this stuff who I can discuss this with in person.

Thanks!

Admission to US Masters degrees through ENEB?
Posted by: David1477 - 06-05-2024, 08:17 AM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (42)

I have 5 courses left to complete my bachelor's degree in business at UoPeople.

Since the degree is nationally accredited, some institutions (like UMPI) won't accept me for their masters degrees.

If I'd complete an MBA or masters degree at ENEB by doing the test-based version which won't cost me too much effort/time, would that help me with my admissions to masters degrees in the US (or UMPI MAOL in specific)?

I don't know if the "professional" masters degree from ENEB would open up new possibilities for my graduate studies. If I understand correctly, I could do the test version for ~500$ (+ maybe another ~500$ for an apostille if necessary) and it would take me <6 months with no papers. If that would allow me to do the UMPI MAOL for <5k compared to other RA masters degrees for 10k it would be financially worth it for me. It would be both cheaper and far less effort than doing a whole bachelor's degree at UMPI to gain admission for the MAOL.

Does anybody have experience with this or did anybody try to use their ENEB degree to enroll in the MAOL at UMPI or other RA online masters in the US?

  UMPI Questions
Posted by: SophiaPrincess - 06-04-2024, 07:05 PM - Forum: UMPI - University of Maine at Presque Isle Discussion - Replies (8)

I have searched UMPI's website, the general catalog, the Spring 2024 YourPace catalog and asked Jessica but can't find answers to a few questions. I would be grateful for your input.

  1. 1. Is there a way to read the course content before the course officially starts? If it matters, I intend to take Eng 121, Mat 140, Bus 200, PCJ 215, Bus 220, Bus 330, Bus 415, Bus 430, Bus 469 and Bus 489 over several eight week sessions.

  1. 2. What happens if a YourPace student doesn't finish a course before the end of the session? Is all progress lost or is that student able to continue where they left off in the next term?

  1. 3. How does one find out who is teaching a specific course during a specific session? Jessica will tell me AFTER enrolling me in the course.

  1. 4. Two UMPI courses, 341 and 355, aren't listed under YourPace. Is it possible to take them, or other non YourPace courses, through YourPace?

  1. 5. There were mistakes in my transcript evaluation. What is the appeals process at UMPI?  I have strong evidence but Jessica tells me there is nothing I can do. Before I discovered UMPI, I applied to other universities, which made similar errors, and undertook transcript appeals with partial success.

Thank you.

I dropped out of Engineering school last year with over 100 credits, now what?
Posted by: Elephent - 06-04-2024, 06:23 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (5)

I'll try to keep the background brief. Essentially due to a combination of COVID, untreated ADHD, and having never learned proper study and time management habits, I've completely lost the confidence and motivation to finish my degree. My transcript is essentially a Frankenstein's monster of 100-300 level engineering credits across Mechanical, Architectural, and Civil disciplines as I changed majors multiple times in an attempt to spur motivation. That, coupled with a ton of W's and F's littered between the passing grades. 7 years later and I was staring down the barrel of another 4 semesters at minimum to create a 'whole' degree so I instead dropped out. It's been a bit over a year since and I have a steady factory job, no debt (thank god), and am getting married soon, but I'm not satisfied with where I'm at. I'd like to go back to school and get a degree of some kind to help me find a better job with more potential for an upward career path, but I don't really know what to do.

Your Location: Nebraska, United States

Your Age: 26

What kind of degree do you want?: I'd like to get an Associate's degree related to engineering in some way, maybe Drafting/Design or a manufacturing related degree. I'm not opposed to finishing my Bachelor's in engineering either, depending on the timelines.

Budget: I don't have a specific budget in mind. I'd like to spend as little as possible but I wouldn't mind spending more if it meant getting done faster or getting a 'better' degree. I'm currently debt free and make more than I spend with good credit so I'm not opposed to taking out loan if I have to.

Commitments: I work full time between 40-50 hours per week. I have a fiance that I spend most of my time with and our wedding is coming up in fall but we've gotten most of the planning done already. Nothing outside of that.

Dedicated time to study: I could study 2-3 hours per night and on weekends

Timeline: As fast as possible. I'm not well versed in schools with generous transfer policies and their timelines, but if there exists such a place I can get in and out with an associates in 1 term that'd be ideal. If no such place exists, and it's going to take closer to 12-18 months just for an associate's, that is where I would lean more towards a bachelor's program, especially if one exists where I can get out sooner than 2 years.

Tuition assistance/reimbursement: My workplace offers $2,500 per calendar year tuition assistance.

Degree Planning Advice for 55 yr old with 150 credits
Posted by: supernow - 06-04-2024, 05:32 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (14)

Hello everyone,

I am a 55 year old working mother of 5 adult children. I have accumulated a hodgepodge of classes and even after combing the Wiki, I am still not sure of the direction I should go in. I would welcome any advice anyone would be willing to offer. I am languishing in a toxic work environment and believe that the combination of my age and lack of degree is making it difficult for me to change my circumstances.

Thanking you in advance for your graciousness.

Your Location: Georgia, United States.
Your Age: 55
What kind of degree do you want?: I am open to suggestions. I am on a Director level with over 30 years of experience in strategic leadership, events, and project management. I am looking to move into a chief of staff role.
Budget:  I'd like the cheapest route possible, but I would also like to prioritize the fastest route possible. I’d love to see the easiest route, but that is not my 1st priority.
Commitments: I work full-time but can study evenings/weekends.
Dedicated time to study: As much 4-6 hours each evening and all weekend. Approximately 40-50 hours/wk.
Timeline: Finishing the courses required for the degree as fast as possible would be ideal.

Tuition assistance/reimbursement: No tuition assistance available.

I noticed a new perk in my Perkspot portal.  Purdue global is offering 20% off undergrad degrees and 14% off graduate degrees.  I can’t promise this will be available to everyone, but wanted to mention it in case there is anyone who wants to see if they have this offer too.  I know there are a lot of employers and alumni groups who use Perkspot.
