What does a credit cost at your CC

I don't seem to understand what all the fees are like:

Off Semester, Off Hour, Off Campus
Part-time (per credit hour) $56.00

But figuring on 1 student in county I get $663 for one 3 credit english course. That just seems rediculous to me.

Don't forget the cheap rates at NMJC and Clovis...those work for anyone and they take a lot of CLEP. NMJC went up a little this year, but its still a terrific bargain: Tuition and Fees - New Mexico Junior College

Because of my sons many learning disabilities I think an in seat class is what he needs. I did send him to an excellent CC out of state with a great reputation for special ed assistance. The problem was he had to be the one to tell instructors about his difficulties and the accommodations he needed. I don't want to make that mistake again it was a costly and wasted semester. Maybe if he continues to mature he will be able to do online or self paced courses at some time in the future.

Linda, I wanted to make sure that you are aware that CLEP does offer special accommodations. For the most part, I have had candidates test who required extra time (usually 150% or 200%). The candidate must have a documented disability which can be communicated from their doctor or an IEP from their current school. I have not heard of anything like this from DSST, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they also have procedures in place for special accommodations.

My CC is ridiculous and by googling alternatives/CLEPing is how I found this forum. Unfortunately I found this right as I was trying to sign up for classes and going though financial aid so I have a small loan out.

DCCC (Delaware County Community College) per credit costs 2013-2014:
Residents of sponsoring school districts* $105.00
Pennsylvanians residing in an area that does not sponsor the College $210.00
Out-of-state residents $315.00

However, the really tack on a ton of fees every semester, online classes included

I'm in a non-sponsoring district and I went to take 1 class last summer: $630 for tuition + about $350 in fees! I dropped it and just waited for fall semester so that the fees would be spread over the other classes I needed. That made my classes roughly $750 each on last years pricing.

Never again. I'm doing FEMA and testing my way out now though I may need to take a few classes at Clovis/BYU since I'm a communications major. Next test for me is A&I on Sept 23.

The Alamo Community Colleges charge a flat rate of $480 for the first 6 credits. The more credits you take, the less you pay per credit hour. 12 credits come out to be $69.25 per credit hour. 15 credits come out to be $66.93 per credit hour. If you take the max of 18 credits in a semester, it's around $65.39.

My local community college is the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) and if you take less than 12 credits (part time) then it is $177.00 per credit. However, if you take 12 or more credits (full-time) then they charge a tuition of $1,812.00. So that is $151 per credit for 12 credits but less than $100 a credit for 19 credits (the max).

Edit: That's for in-state. Out-of-state is a lot higher.

@BGSU Yes I know he could get accommodations but I don't think that will help him. He is just VERY bad at testing and has an aversion to it. He also has really poor attention span and would probably just get bored taking a test and give up. As I said I am not sure he is ready for college even now. That's why I thought just one CC course would be a good start. I also don't think he has the self motivation to take an online course he needs to be there in person then he might become engaged in the process.

Linda, in your son's case, I'd go for the highest utility for my dollar. At the end of the day, it's a long road between one class and a degree. Maybe there is a better way? Maybe there are classes he could take that would be more direct-entry into the work force. There is always time for school, which is really just about a credential anyway. If he wanted to be a certified underwater basket-weaver, I bet your CC offers that program without any gen eds. Almost all of the certificate and diploma programs have zero to little gen eds. He'd still get accommodations, and potentially job skills. Also, there are lots of good non-credit options too. My oldest took the welding certificate program last year and really loved it. Had we stayed in Illinois, he could have taken an entry level job at John Deere. They have an agreement with the CC for that specific cert. If you're going to spend the money, see if you can help him make the most of it. And if he's going to spend the time, maybe it would be more fun?

I think the prices for CC is pretty on point with what you found. I know here in NYC, it's about $175 a credit. I payed $334 per credit at a 4 year univeristy in NYC with a $200 student fee each semester. Thank god for Pell, TAP, academic grants, and being able to graduate a year early thanks to CLEP and DSST testing so I didn't have that large a debt when I graduated. In grad school now I am paying $732 each credit with a $135 fee each semester. And that is all out of pocket. I will be paying student loans off for 25 years when all is said and done.
