University of Phoenix
#1
Hey everyone,

I just found out my work will cover 100% of an MBA over at University of Phoenix since this are "partners". How are they these days, I know they took a lot of scrutiny back then. Everyone seems to just spam the word SCAM all over reddit. I was planning an HAU MBA upon graduating and just thought I'd ask about it since It was offered to me.

I kind of agree. Pretty hard to pass up on it, I may do a MS Information Systems there instead MBA if that is also covered.

I wouldn't say scam. Deceptive marketing? Yes. Overpriced? Yes. However, this is not a factor for you since it would be fully covered. Do you care about the reputation/perception of the degree or do you just want a check in the box MBA?

If your company offered to cover 100% at UoP, it is possible they have agreements with other Universities as well. What is your company's Tuition reimbursement policy? If it's one of those policies where it's 100% covered for partner universities and $5k a year of external schools, that would still fully cover HAU.

I never heard that the quality of instruction was a problem. It was always deceptive marketing. They would sign people up who were not prepared for college level courses, and keep stringing them along.

Free is free, but you're also not getting much bang for your employer's buck. UoP's reputation is in the toilet these days. They're paying million dollar class action settlements right and left and practically begging door to door for a state university system to buy them out. Awful name to have on your resume. Might actually make things harder if you have to leave your current company.

If you can go somewhere else for free I would.

A lot of people frown upon for-profit schools, mainly because many of them in the past were known for prioritizing profit over education and investing heavily in marketing.

Something might be free, but what is your time worth?

WGU offers a low-cost MBA and is one of the quickest programs to complete. If you're seeking prestige, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers an iMBA for $24k or the iMSM for $12k, which can be laddered into the iMBA.

Some people also choose colleges close to where they live, as this can offer more value as an alumnus.
Degrees: BA Computer Science, BS Business Administration with a concentration in CIS, AS Natural Science & Math, TESU. 4.0 GPA 2022.
Course Experience:  CLEP, Instantcert, Sophia.org, Study.com, Straighterline.com, Onlinedegree.org, Saylor.org, Csmlearn.com, and TEL Learning.
Certifications: W3Schools PHP, Google IT Support, Google Digital Marketing, Google Project Management

Personally I wouldn't want a degree from U of P. Their reputation is awful and many people in a variety of industries look down at their degrees. Free is great, but at what cost to your personal reputation? They've been trying to sell themselves to a state school for a long time. They're running out of $$$$.

An agreement was announced in 2023 by which the University of Phoenix would be sold to the University of Idaho. Although the announcement didn't include any change of name, there might be a rebrand in its future, like other for-profits that have sold to and become affiliates of brick-and-mortar state university systems (Kaplan becoming Purdue Global, Ashford becoming University of Arizona Global Campus, Grantham becoming University of Arkansas Grantham).

However, there's been strong pushback against the proposed acquisition in the Idaho legislature, and the acquisition might not even occur.
