UMPI & Sophia
#1
I spent some time today reviewing Sophia's courses and how they transfer to UMPI. There's been a lot of courses added since I started this UMPI train back in summer 2020. There's a lot more options today!

GEC courses and which courses from Sophia transfer in for them. As of today, May 14, 2023, every course except 2 can be completed at Sophia. 2D you have to complete at UMPI unless you’ve completed a studio art course somewhere (such as a photography class with studio time, figure drawing, pottery, 2D design, etc). 4A you also complete at UMPI and it’s a 0-credit orientation course on how to use the Strut Learning Platform. It takes less than 2 hours to complete. For several GEC requirements, there are multiple courses which fulfill the requirement. You must have 40 credits in the GEC. Some majors will have different math requirements such as the BABA's usually require MAT140 which Sophia doesn't offer.

1A English Composition 1
1B English Composition 2
1C Public Speaking, Workplace Communication, Business Communications, or US Government
1D English Composition 1
2A Introduction to Ethics, Ancient Greek Philosophers, Introduction to Sociology, Critical Thinking, Introduction to Psychology, or Approaches to Studying Religions
2B Introduction to Ethics, Ancient Greek Philosophers, Introduction to Sociology, Critical Thinking, Introduction to Psychology, or Approaches to Studying Religions
2C English Composition 2
2D UMPI
2E Art History 1 or 2
3A College Algebra, Introduction to Statistics, Calculus 1, Precalculus, or Introduction to College Math
3B College Algebra, Introduction to Statistics, Calculus 1, Precalculus, or Introduction to College Math
3C Human Biology or Introduction to Nutrition
3D Environmental Science or Introduction to Chemistry
3E Human Biology and Human Biology Lab or Introduction to Chemistry and Introduction to Chemistry Lab
4A UMPI
4B English Composition 2
4C Introduction to Ethics, Ancient Greek Philosophers, Critical Thinking, or Approaches to Studying Religions
5A Introduction to Sociology or Approaches to Studying Religions
5B US History 1 or 2
5C Spanish 1 or Spanish 2
5D Introduction to Ethics, Ancient Greek Philosophers, Critical Thinking, or Approaches to Studying Religions
5E US Government

Critical Thinking is a new course and there was some speculation on it fulfilling 2D, but it does not according to the transfer database. Keep in mind that this list is subject to change. It's great to see so many areas of the GEC can now be completed on Sophia and that there are a variety of options for every areas of the GEC.

Thanks for updating us in regards to the Sophia.org transfer to UMPI General Education requirements. It's great that Sophia.org alone can practically get students up to 90 credits into their Your Pace degree program of choice at UMPI. Hope it just gets more streamlined for the entire process at UMPI, changes for the better...

In UMPI's transfer database, under the NEWER ACE/Credly section, Sophia's Approaches to Studying Religion is listed as ANT1XX and NOT as satisfying any GEC requirement.

I believe that the Sophia Pathways Learning LLC section is deprecated and no longer used. Or it's not supposed to be used. As an example, the "Saylor Academy" section lists just six classes that have been transferred to UMPI. The ACE/Credly section lists 19.

There is at least one error in the Credly section. Critical Thinking is listed as a business course which is odd. It is listed as philosophy course in the Sophia listing though. I think some of this is due to a change in Registrars. Alex left last year and the database changed quite a bit after he left. There's a caveat at the end of my post about changes.

Thank you ss20ts. My wife is working a degree plan for herself at this time and this will be monumentally helpful. When I say my wife is working on it, I mean I am working on one for her lol.

Thanks for the actual list. I have a newbie question:
Let's assume I passed "Introduction to Ethics" at Sophia. Will that solely transfer to 2A + 2B + 4C+ 5D. Can one Sophia course therefore be used to gain 10 or more credits?

Please see this post #10, it's practically the same question.  Rachel83AZ and I answered it on posts #11 and last post #12 respectively.
In short - No.  You are hitting gen ed requirements, not credit requirements. Link: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid392392

No. It is only worth 3 credits no matter how many GEC requirements it meets. But you don't need to complete new classes for every single GEC requirement. There are 22 GEC requirements which would be worth 60+ credits, but you only need 40 credits or 13 classes + 1 lab science to meet GEC requirements.
