UMPI CPA
#1
I completed a UMPI BABA - Management and leadership concentration. I am now looking into the possibility of taking my state's CPA exams. I see that there are some required courses to do that:

  • Financial accounting

  • Cost or managerial accounting

  • Taxation

  • Auditing

  • Accounting information systems
The most obvious path is to just go through the UMPI yourpace accounting concentration. Would I be able to simply complete the (6) concentration courses? Basically, the core courses, being I've already done them, would just transfer over.

Those most likely wouldn't be a big deal to knock out in a session. This is the easiest path I can think of that allows me to study/take the CPA exams (a massive undertaking, I'll be paying for prep courses).

Does anyone else have a better idea to do this?

Do you need a minimum number of credits? Do you have those covered already? UMPI would be a great way to make up the extra credits, if you need them.

Per https://expect.umpi.edu/yourpace/ you can be a non-degree student at UMPI, but you would need to email them to confirm that they'll allow this.
In progress:

24 semester hours in accounting that cover each of the following subject areas:

  • Financial accounting

  • Cost or managerial accounting

  • Taxation

  • Auditing

  • Accounting information systems

In that case, I'd definitely email them about returning as a non-degree student for those courses. $1400 for 24 credits works out to be less than $60/credit. Sounds like UMPI is the easiest and cheapest way to go about it.

So your degree has been conferred? If it has, then contact UMPI to come back as a non-degree seeking student and complete the courses. If your degree hasn't been conferred, you maybe able to add on a second concentration/minor.

I was wondering, do they not allow a second degree? Why not go for the BA Accounting instead if you're going for the CPA?

Actually, looking at that, I probably just have to do that.

It looks like I would have to take (10) courses that I haven't taken. Coincidentally, that is the min amount I can take at UMPI. So, that is most likely the easiest route to get all of the courses I need to satisfy the CPA requirements.

You'll have to complete a minimum of 30 new credits at UMPI. But with the BA in Accounting, there's a lot of accounting courses that weren't done in the BABA so you're probably close to 30 credits between the accounting courses and BLaw 2. You won't have to worry about the GEC or any electives. You do have to apply for the degree through the website. Because your first degree was the BABA, you may not have to wait for your degree to confer before applying. Apply today and see how it goes!
