Also, if you don't take the time to read the threads, i really don't think these people will read the necessary resources.

soupbone Wrote:I agree with this thread. The search function is great but I would like to throw out a suggestion for it. I've been looking for some information for a friend on testing out of a graduate level Management Information Systems (MIS) course. If you use the search function and type in "MIS" it will not search for it due to the word being too short. The problem with this is that people more often than not would type "MIS" rather than than the full word. Also when searching for "Management Information Systems" you cannot quote the whole phrase for the search so you end up with all the threads that contain all of the words. Allowing searches to be placed in quotes would lead to less frustration for the person searching for information and less new threads.
When I first joined the forum two years ago I posted this exact issue. I was gently pointed in the direction of the "Google Site Search" option which exists under the "Search" heading. This was added as an option for this very purpose. Try it--it works well.

I like the Google search feature also. Another suggestion is, when I was looking for more specific info on the GRE Psychology, for example, when I found a forum member who had taken it, I clicked on their name and looked through all their posts to help it narrow down to threads where that test was discussed. This is probably more tedious than a forum search, but less so than wading through hundreds of google search results. So, that's another suggestion, if you notice someone on here has already done exactly what you are trying to do, read all that person's posts.

I like to think if you have a question you are probably not ready to post. If you are frustrated you have been to 2 forums and have scoured the schools website for an hour to no avail. Now its time to post. Either way you wont get answers unless you go after them.

As someone who spent the better part of a Saturday night (ok, so I officially don't have a life!) reading through the mammoth Aleks thread last weekend, I am in agreement with the "use the search feature" school of thought.
BTW, that's about 3 hours of my life I'm not getting back! hilarious
But, the countless hours it saved me from trying to prepare for a Statistics test that I most likely wasn't going to do well in was worth it.

I have no problem answering questions from someone who truly needs help. I think my major problem are the people who come on here and read nothing search nothing and their first post is a general question that has been asked many times before.
I also have received the " send me all your study guides" PM I usually check out how many post the person has and if any of them are contributing to the forum before I decide if I will send any study guides. I just ignore the send me all study guide request, because when I was a newbie at this I sent everything to someone once and then saw all my study guides for sale on E-bay. I won't give away something so others can charge for it.

How rude of him!
It really is the least someone can do to prove himself before craving such a boon. Passing a CLEP or two, or becoming a squire, really isn't that difficult when you put your whole mind to it.

Yes, and I and many of the newbies have used that search engine frequently and to great satisfaction. However, sometimes a specific question arises that is not answered by searching (such as mine about which science might be the easiest and quickest to take). This information is a sold goldmine in the minds of all of the older members of this board. But hey, I guess being new here means that I should be grateful just to be able to read on the board and not benefit from anyone's experience. I am truly sorry for having bothered or offended anyone's time, energy or experience. And by the way Jennifer your response to this particular threat was extremely courteous that you enjoyed meeting and helping the new members.
Again, I can and do think for myself. What I personally was looking for was some experienced advice from some seasoned instantcert members who could guide me in the right direction.
Thanks again for the advice which has been thrown my way. It has benefitted me and I have tried to benefit those whom asked questions that I knew the answer to, guess from now on, its on to silence and just watch the board for any gleams of information that might assist my own personal travel.
