Subjective Opinions Wanted - Which UL History exam is the EASIEST?
#1
Hi All...

Any opinions regarding UL History exams would be greatly appreciated. I need one Upper Level 3 credit course to complete my 2nd depth (in History) from Excelsior...

I haven't taken a history course in 20+ years, and have no particular interest in history, so I'm looking for the EASIEST exam possible...

Here are my options and my problems...

UExcel - World Conflicts since 1900 - to me, this exam seems the most difficult, and has me very intimidated (Big Negative) - however, the testing center is only a few miles from my home (Big Positive).

DSST - Civil War - this test seems the easiest if only because it is concentrated on only one war and one relatively short period of time. As an added bonus, there seems to be many resources available for study, (Big Positive) - however, the testing center is at a large university located a tremendous distance from my home. At this point I am unsure how the heck I would get there (Big Negative).

I know there are other History DSST's, but felt the Civil War was the "least worst"...True???

Again, any advice/opinions would be appreciated - I could put off the whole history requirement for now, but since I know it's going to cause me problems (transportation/subject matter), I thought I'd attempt to get it over with next...

Thanks!Confusedeeya:

Be sure to check if one of the community college's in your general area administer the DSST/CLEP exams. I found one within 30min driving distance from my home.

starting point, google: community college testing center [state or county]

I would choose the civil war exam over the Soviet Union exam. It is much easier studying without the difficult Russian names to remember.

this shouldn't scare you, but Civil War was the only exam I ever failed. It's really all about memorization, which I am awful at, and less about critical thinking, which I am better at.

It is a good thing you are at Exelsior and not TESC. At TESC the Civil War DSST is considered lower level.

Memorization has always been my strong suit...I mentioned your post to my mother who said that by the time I'm ready to test I'd be able to tell her the color of all the Generals' underwear and what they ate for lunch on the day of their most famous battle...Confusedmilelol:

I took both the civil war and the soviet union DSST tests for my degree. They're pretty much a wash, as I only did slightly (2 points) better on the Soviet Union test. Just pick whichever one sounds more interesting...

If you like audio books, Battle Cry of Freedom is available on Audible and is one of the suggested resources for this exam. There are also lectures on Open Yale Open Yale Courses | The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, 1845-1877

I would sit through the lectures again simply for the enjoyment of listing to David Blight. This man is amazing.

DSST Civil War is definitely the easiest of the history DSSTs and the World Conflicts ECE. You're definitely right that it's easier because it covers a shorter time period. IC and the SEF has pretty much everything you need, but if you have time to learn the subject more, all you need is free online. Here's my feedback.

I've done the World Conflicts ECE. It's tough and deep... focuses a lot on international relations. It's more of like the political aspects behind world conflicts. While studying for it, I thought I'd landed myself in more than I'd asked for. :p I passed with an A though, and looking back, am glad I took the test. It helped me better understand the underlying currents and background conflicts of current international political strivings. Smile
