3 Degrees-Is this possible?
#11
I agree that the AAS + BA in Social Science combo first is a good one, but I would like to add another suggestion:

If he is considering the Associates in Biz, why not just have him do the BSBA if he really has time and energy to get a 3rd degree before he moves to grad school? An associates degree is MUCH better than nothing, and especially impressive for some of the younger homeschooled kids here, but doesn't do a lot in the real world.

The AAS seems to be relatively useful as far as associates-level degrees go, but having been in the business world for years, I can honestly say that an associates in business would not serve a purpose for getting a job. Hypothetically, you could say that the ASBA (is that the acronym?) should prove that your son has some business sense and might qualify him for advancement somewhere, but business is just so common. I mean, MBA's are a dime a dozen, business undergrads are everywhere, so the ASBA would be a stretch to use for almost anything. If he tried to say that he had a solid understanding of business because of the associates, he would probably get laughed at for anything other than entry level.

If he had to go to any extra trouble for this associates, I would say get the BSBA or don't spend the time doing it, unless it's just really, really easy to get the ASBA. After all, it wouldn't hurt anything, it just wouldn't add a significant amount of value to his resume in most situations.

Sorry! That's just my opinion and based only on my experience, so it may not be true for all fields. It sounds like he's doing a great job!!!

bricabrac Wrote:If they say you can graduate with the ASBA at the same time as the dual concentration BSBA, then what was said prior is untrue. There is no difference if the associates is a AAS or ASBA. With a dual focus BSBA I would prefer the AAS, over the ASBA. It would be something different in comparison to yet a third undergrad business degree; that would be overkill. The ES&ST degree could get you elected to the company safety committee and/or be a cool addition to the HR function.Smile

Definitely. I emailed this time - maybe I was not clear on the telephone, who knows - so hopefully they agree that it is allowable. I am interested in the ASBA also (no extra credits were required, and in hard economic times when PhDs are applying for entry-level positions, it's good to have an option to 'downgrade' a resume if the unspeakable ever happened to avoid an overqualified pile), but the AAS is more interesting. The reasons you listed are why I think the AAS-ES&ST degree would be a great addition to the BSBA. Working in both Operations management and HR, it's valuable information. Tack on a 10-hour or 30-hour OSHA cert, and it also adds versatility to work as a Safety Officer if the need arises.

Sorry to hijack the thread, momtomany! The 12 new credits just cannot be used to complete a different degree's requirements. They do not have to be from the area of study, but they typically are just due to the universal overlap of Gen Ed requirements.

Thanks for all the information.
I think we will stick to getting his AAS in ESST and BASS done first and if time permits work on the 3rd degree. I have a template made out of all the exam requirements that will meet both degrees, which he is working on although the other day he mentions that he would like to take some business courses too (which would not do any good for either of the above 2 degrees).
Here is what I've put together for the ASBS-I'm hoping that this will work out if he decides to go with the 3rd degree. Please let me know if it doesn't look good.

II. Management Core 18
A. Principles of Financial Accounting 3
B. Principles of Managerial Accounting 3
C. Legal Environment for Business 3
D. Principles of Management 3
E. Principles of Marketing 3
F. Introduction to Computers/CIS 3

Below are associated Exams/Courses

A. ACC101 = TESC Financial Accounting = SL Accounting I
B. ACC102 = TESC Managerial Accounting = SL Accounting II
C.LAW-201=Introductory Business Law CLEP
D.MAN-301=Principles of Management CLEP
E.MAR-301=Principles of Marketing CLEP
F.COS-101=Introduction to Computers (Information Systems & Computer Applications)CLEP

Business Electives:
DSST Supervision
DSST Intro to Business

Thanks,

I actually ran across that thread a little bit ago-Thanks, very helpful.

Also below is my AAS ES&ST degree plan. If you do a search there were other exams you could use in the area of study that could also be used in the BA SS degree. I found by using both the AOJ102 (also used to complete Social Science area of study) and LAW201 (used for BSBA) along with the FEMAs (used for the Social Science free electives), I was able to make the best use of those credits.

I had seen AOJ102 listed before on the boards but didn't list it for him on the Social Science area. Knowing that he can get double credit, so to speak, I think I will put that one down for him.
Thanks again for your help.

momtomany5,

Your plan looks great! Please consider taking the dantes version of COS-101, introduction to computing. I thought the exam was straightforward compared to the reviews I've read of CLEPs wordy version of the exam. Just an opinion.

You're welcome! Happy to help.

Bricabrac,

Thanks for mentioning this about the computer clep. I've read all the feedback from the 3 different exam in the feedback section and noticed several folks agreeing that the DSST version was easier. My son has studied all the ISCA flashcards and was just about ready for the test when he got side-tracked into taking 3 other exams since his studying. I'll have him go over the DSST version flash cards and also the website again Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101 to see if he is about ready to take that one soon.
