Practice exams in official clep study guide - vs.- actual clep test
#1
Hello forum! I have been using the Official Clep Study Guide to study with for the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature Clep exam. I am taking it tomorrow. I haven't gone into a lot of detail with it yet (hoping to get in a couple of hours of studying prior to the test) but I wanted feedback from those of you who have used this resource to study with. I have seen a few people have passed this exam going in completely 'cold' with no studying. Is this a good resource? Am I over thinking the difficulty of this exam? I'm somewhat considering pushing the exam back a little to allow for more studying. However, if you all think I don't need to, let me know! banghead:confused:Big Grin

If you felt comfortable with the practice exam in the CLEP book then I'd say go for it tomorrow. Most people do well on this exam so I'm sure you'll do fine if you prepared.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

I totally agree with CooperAlex. (Hi CooperAlex! You were my first friend on here!)...This exam is loaded with common sense. Let me try to ease your mind and make up the tone of a typical A&I L question :

Read the following passage to answer the next x questions:

Fee, fye, foe, fum,
I smell the blood of an Englishmon

1. Is the tone of this passage:
a. Happy
b. Sad
c. Threatening
d. Funny

Well, let's see...there's the world "blood" and someone is "smelling" it...that doesn't sound too happy. And let's see, "fee fye, foe, fum", That sounds almost jolly, so I wouldn't say this is sad. So sad is out...next-If some said they smelled my "English" "blood", it does sound like they might come after me! YIKES, that's similar to threatening! So threatening is looking like a good answer to choose! And the last answer...funny? Hmmm, it could be....but CLEPs sometime have 2 similar answers to make you think...and Funny might be the answer, but when I say this out loud, it sounds a bit scary and intimating, especially that bit about the blood!...so yeah, I think that threatening would be a good answer.
------------------
I just made this question and answer up. Now you don't even have to know that this is from the children's tale "Jack and the Beanstalk", or know that the person saying, "Fi, Fye, foe, Fum" is a giant, and heck, you don't even have to speak or be able to translate Giant, to hear the tone of that passage. This is what A&I L is all about. Don't over complicate it. It's 6 credits, go for it. If you want to try another 6 credit exam, and put in loads of time studying, you can always take American Lit (harder for sure) for 6 credits or Brit Lit (even harder still). Education Portal has awesome videos. They take a while, but I would say more than 50% of my A&I L exam had stuff from Education Portal on it. I am not sure what you are applying these 6 credits from A&IL to, but if it's Gen Ed or Humanities for TESC classes, you have options. If you haven't taken Humanities CLEP that's pretty easy too (easier than American Lit or Brit Lit) and also heavy on the credits. So you have nothing to lose by going for it with A&IL. I mean there are about 100 people in the last year saying this is one of the easiest CLEPs they ever took, so that and your Prep using the Offical Guide should be good enough to pass Smile

Best of Luck! And trust CooperAlex! He knows this stuff up and down ;D

PS, Can't wait to see your notice/signature saying that you passed Big Grin Go get em tiger!

^^Good advice. Big Grin ^^

The official practice test was very similar to the actual exam (my real one seemed like it had a little more poetry). I don't recall any of the same passages, but I did get basically the same score as near as I can figure it. Getiton1's "sample question" is definitely the thrust of this test - most of them can be deciphered that way as long as you don't take too long on any single problem.
"Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe...." ~Hebrews 12:28

Tests passed:
CLEP Introductory Psychology: 70
CLEP College Composition: 62
DSST Principles of Public Speaking: 73
CLEP College Mathematics: 69
CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature: 78

DSST Environment and Humanity: 61
DSST Ethics in America: 467

Goal: AA from Charter Oak by December 2013

I just wanted to say that Getiton1's explanation of how A&I Lit works is one of the best I've ever seen. Nice job.

I took the practice exam in the Official Clep Study Guide this morning and got 52/78 questions. That's roughly 66%. Is that sufficient enough of a score to try and take the actual exam?

I would say yes.

IMO, you are stressing out too much about this exam. Read over your notes, go take the test, and come back and tell us how easy it was. Smile

I did it . . . 61 on my first Clep exam. Thanks for the advice and suggestions. What are some other easy CLEP exams?

Way to go!!!

What college courses have you taken, what interests do you have? IMO, for an exam to be easy you need to have some prior knowledge. I took the three CLEP tests in my signature "cold" and passed.

What is your planned major? Free-clep-prep has a difficulty list for CLEP and DSST. That's a good place to start.
