Quote:Hopefully more Saylor "ACE" credits soon
Hi all - This is Jeff Davidson from Saylor.org. Thanks for all the mentions in the post and site generally. Just wanted to give a heads up that we may have more credit recommended courses this year. We can't guarantee anything yet, but really hoping to have several more ACE credit recommended courses by end of this summer (2015). Possibly some new TECEP alignments too.
Great work putting this comprehensive pathway together!

Although I have never used them, I love what they stand for! I've been thinking of doing some of these courses for personal enrichment. Keep up the great work Saylor!
Are they funded 100% by donation?

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.
Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.
Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.
Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.
Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Yes, they are a non-profit organization that charges nothing of its students. Students only pay a $25 fee to ProctorU for exams in credit-bearing courses.

agreed, I LOVE Saylor. I use their bookshelf all the time, I use their course content all the time. I don't know why they are pushing so hard to get into the credit-earning space (don't get me wrong, I'm glad..I think...but you have to wonder what's driving that?) and if that's going to morph their model in some way down the line.

I served as a proctor for someone who took one of their ACE courses (which made it FREE for that person). Great organization.
I believe that yes, they are entirely funded by donations, and most of the donations come from a fellow named Michael Saylor. He is a tech enterpreneur who is famous for having lost billions, on paper, when SEC discovered accounting irregularities in his company (MicroStrategy). Company still exists and is profitable, though, so he is still worth many millions.

Mr. Saylor's ego? That would explain it, and you'd have to admit it's not the worst outlet for an outsized ego.

No, he's a millionaire, which means he's not stupid- and he has a strategy.

Maybe he's just a philanthropist. It does society more good to offer them free courses that are worth college credit than those that aren't. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated a lot of money to endeavors in education.

Maybe, I'm not speculating about his motive today. Just something to log in the back of my brain.
