I don't really understand the issue with this. People sell their eggs all the time, because a lot of people are looking for them. Paying off debt seems like a responsible way for her to spend her money.

 
That won't work here (Canada). Women can donate eggs, here, voluntarily -- and that, I think, is a very good thing. But they cannot not be compensated more than the cost of the procedure. Same with sperm donations - no compensation except travel expense. And blood? Forget money. All done through the system, screening etc. No money changes hands. 

In the US I understand re: blood, that you can't sell the red stuff, but the plasma goes for up to $30 a pop, twice a week. There, that'll buy about two bottles a day of cheap fortified wine - and I suspect that's what a fair bit of the money is used for.

I'm not judging this woman for ANYTHING she did here. And I know NEVER to tell women what they should do - particularly with their own bodies. I AM judging an education system, its financing system and a health system(?) that facilitated each and every one of her problems, from finances to bad health. These so-called systems, that can bring about such dire results in so many cases -- are barbaric. Nothing less. 

And @bjcheung77 Bryan -- NONE of this is a 'lol' thing. Maybe there are some bad decisions - but those - and their consequences as described - are not a laughing matter. And yes indeed, it looks like she spent a lot of money going to school in New York City for 2 years. Did you know the average monthly cost of a 1-bedroom apartment in NYC is $4,250 a month? That's $102,000 for 2 years. Before you eat. It gets worse - Donald Trump might be your landlord.

Plenty of people in Canada make bad decisions - but they don't have cash motivation to put their bodies in danger. Those things -sperm, eggs, blood etc. are gifts to us. And they may be given to others. But not sold.

Joining the military is a major life decision.

Not many people want to live their life outside the country on a base far away from their family and friends. 

Let alone risk getting their arm/leg blown off in some war.

@Johann, that LOL wasn't really "laugh out loud" but more a mention of "learner over-look", what I mean by that is the lady in the article overlooked possible ways of getting their education. I'm not making fun of anything, their choices, schooling, situation, whatever else... I think it would have been a better idea for her to take undergrad, MBA and the MPH at a local public/state school in California before going off into NY or even attending NYU.

She has a good head on her shoulders as she's really into "learning" and getting their education from inexpensive (DEAC) MBA to her inexpensive 1st/2nd year courses done for undergrad... but she hasn't looked it through and not distinguishing the facts her temptation took over. She let her "wants" defeat the "needs", in other words, she has options, but chose the ones that were much more expensive. She could pick similarly ranked universities to NYU...

IF the military accepted her......

IF she survived bootcamp......

IF she made it through her enlistment.....

Lots of ifs. Why do people push the military? It's not a good fit for many people even if they are accepted.
