Oh really? Student sells eggs to pay off debt... - bjcheung77 - 05-17-2022

LOL - I'm not sure I am buying this... Basically, I can't seem to see the truth in the story, how does the debt amount become such a large number after a short time from graduation?  Especially when she took steps towards "cheaper" first/second years of education... Did she use the fin aid for something else? Bad decisions overall... I wonder if she's trying to get the public to "help crowd fund" her through this article some how...

no other option ?
navy, air force, marines, coast guard, army ?

Quote:Despite working three jobs while earning her undergraduate degree — and living rent-free at her parent’s house — she was still $25,000 in the hole after four years. Then, when she decided to earn her master’s degree in public health, she tacked on another $40,000 per each additional year of education at New York University.

worked 3 jobs, lived rent free and still had $25 k in debt ?
she made bad choices

and then 40k per year at NYU LOL
moron

Maybe she worked 1 job per year: 3 jobs!

I don't doubt the $167,000 for one minute. $25,000 for 2 years of "conventional" undergrad at a B&M school? That's pretty darn good by today's standards. Tuition of $40k/year for NYU ($80k) total, puts us at $105,000. She isn't from New York, and it doesn't say she was killing herself with work while studying at NYU, so she probably rolled some of her living expenses (particularly rent) into the debt. All of that plus some interest and $167,000 seems about right.

I am sympathetic to her situation, up to a point. It's hard to get a decent job in a lot of fields (having worked for a decade in libraries, museums, and historic sites with a master's degree and never making more than $15/hour, I can attest to this fact).

I feel like hers isn't really the best case to put forward for the need to reform the cost of higher education. She had a good bit of debt and didn't try to get that cleaned up before she started grad school. She chose an expensive graduate school in an expensive city. That is all on her. If you Google her, she has a notable presence on the web. She is interested in public health advocacy, working with non-profits, etc. That is great. More power to her, but you should be aware going into it that you are not likely to make a lot of money in those fields. I have this sinking suspicion that she wasn't trying to find work with an insurance company, hospital system, or similar organizations after completing her MPH--entities that could have paid her a middle-class salary and allowed her to actually pay her debt. She also didn't pursue a nursing degree, PA degree, or something similar where, again, she could have easily paid this debt. But, the world needs nurses and public health advocates. Not everyone is suitable for each of those fields...

Given her interests, I can understand her not wanting to join the military. It is also distinctly possible that she couldn't. 75% of American young people do not meet current military standards. I didn't. I begged recruiters from the Navy, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard to let me in, but I had a major knee surgery at 15 and am very near sighted. Could probably have gotten one of them waived, but not both. I didn't talk to a Marine Corps recruiter, its true, as I didn't think they would be any different and stopped liking to eat crayons at age 2. It always bothers me, and this is a personal thing, I acknowledge, that people say "they should have joined the military." There are plenty of us who dreamed of that from the time we were five years old who were not able to pursue that. Also, again personal, it really sucks when you get recruiting materials in the mail CONSTANTLY from the military, even after they have rejected you. Ok, I feel better now.

I'm not a doctor, but assuming the procedure is safe, I think that was a good, honest way to make $50K. You not only make money but help others. Way better alternative to being a sugarbaby.

I don't really understand the issue with this. People sell their eggs all the time, because a lot of people are looking for them. Paying off debt seems like a responsible way for her to spend her money.

Joining the military wouldn't have reduced her student loans for years. Not to mention it would only cover a fraction of what she owes.

The military is also NOT for everyone! Many people aren't even eligible for the military even if they want to join. Believe it or not most young people today are not interested in the military.

She worked 3 jobs during her time as an undergrad meaning she was working much of the time she was an undergrad. She could have been working 3 jobs at the same time. College kids typically make minimum wage. After taxes it's not much when you have part hours.

2 years at NYU = $80K
$25K from undergrad which was dirt cheap so we're up to $105K. Maybe she was at NYU for 3 years as a grad student....now we're up to $145K

Don't forget the interest! Interest is accumulating on MANY student loans while you're a student. That's included in the total you owe. She could EASILY owe $167K after 6 years of college.

She also had to pay to live in NYC which is NOT cheap. $167K is not as crazy as it sounds today for an education.

Military in general is not a reliable way to relive student debt anyway:

She studied Kinesiology, then got a DEAC MBA before she went back to school for a MPH at NYU. From the outside, it seems like 3 seriously stupid decisions. Basically 3 useless degrees.

There was a good stretch of time when the Quantic MBA was free (I could be wrong but I believe they stopped offering the free program). I wouldn't pass that up if I had the opportunity.
