Hi all:
I need 6 SS credits, and am a bit torn about what to take.
I would like to take Social Science & History, get the 6 credits and be done, but there are a couple of problems with this:
I'm pretty good with History stuff, but weak in Social Science. I bought the 2010 Official Clep Study guide, so there is that to study, but no InstantCert flash cards available or else I would get a subscription to those.
I was thinking of getting this book : Amazon.com: CLEP Social Sciences and History: The Best Test Prep for the CLEP (Best Test Preperation & Review Course) (9780738606934): Scott, Ph.D. Dittloff: Books , but don't want to spend the money sight unseen unless it would really help.
So I'm wondering if I should take this test or whether I should change it up and take the 2 U.S. History tests or mix in an American Govt. CLEP. I took the 3 AG Peterson practice exams and scored 65,65, and 67 without any study.
Opinions? And has anyone seen/used the book that I linked to? I'd appreciate any help - my exam is set for June 22nd.

Go take the test w/ those Peterson scores. I passed this one with just a little study. It was far from challenging!

Social Sciences & History shouldn't be a problem for you. I was in your position (good with history, weak on social sciences); all I did was review IC's sociology cards once or twice. Scored a 76. (Oh, I had also taken Introduction to Business, which helped me a bit with the economic questions on SS&H. IC has cards for that too, but they're less helpful for this exam than the Sociology cards.)
If you study a fair bit over the next month, you'll be fine! If you're unsure about paying for IC (very worth it), your library should have a sociology textbook available.

I am considering signing up for IC. I have 20 or so credits to complete my AS, and according to my college everything can be covered by CLEP or DSST. I can finish and not have to set foot into a formal class? Deal. So I figure the flash cards would be helpful with the rest of the stuff I have to take.
Thanks for the info so far, I appreciate the input.

If you want to look at your options, here is what TESC considers Social Science. You'll want to check with your school though to make sure they accept it too.

Okay - I just took the practice test in the 2010 CLEP official Study Guide. Out of 69 questions, I got 44 right. That would mean a 64%, but the book says that wrong answers aren't penalized. Based on that, opinions on my chances to pass this test?
Also, thanks to everyone for their suggestions/advice. Keep it coming - I can use all of the help I can get!

Take the 6 unit SS & History. i just took it for the hell of it cuz i was there taking other stuff. i did NO preparation and got a 55. Not a great score but good enough. what was the main disagreement between the North and South that led to the civil war?
If you answered slavery, you're ready.
Some of the questions are super specific but theres enough common sense ones that you could totally get and just pass.
And hey - if you fail it, then do your other plan where you take 2 Lower Level CLEP/DSST exams - theres tons of em so just pick the easiest ones that u havent taken yet. Cant hurt. and if you pass it, then Boo - YaH, youre done. And if you dont, study with IC on the two that youll need. At least youll elimate the 6 unit SS/History exam one way or the other.

OK, I've got to disagree here. This test wasn't hard but it was not that easy!!! I'm pretty strong on the Civil War & the world wars, and strong on pyschology, fair on sociology. So I just read through the sections in the REA book that I wasn't very familiar with (economics, anthropology, etc.) and took the test. Although I was thrilled to pass & be done with CLEPs, I was not at all happy with my score.
Anyway. Very doable test, but I wouldn't take it cold.
