My son has to take a FEMA IS course!!
#1
He's 13 and in Civil Air Patrol (similar to Jr ROTC), and he has CERT training coming up in a few weeks (Community Emergency Response Team).  In order to be eligible for hands-on training, he has to complete the online FEMA IS course first.

Who knew my knowing things from this forum would actually show up in "the real world"!?!   Tongue

Haha, That's cool! Your son sounds amazing and so ready for college credits.
Hmm, are you going to get your son started with CLEP/FEMA credits for an AA at COSC?
That's the first thing that popped up in my mind for some reason.

Can confirm, I was working for a local government and I had to do several of the FEMA courses during my first couple days on the job. I may have had to do another one when I became part of the emergency operations center.

Well, I don't have any experience with that, and he's only 13, so it's just kind of interesting.

I do.

So, I was briefly excited hearing about them in here being potentially useful (I've taken a TON of those over the years)!!

I was in the CAP in the 80's. Lot of opportunity to do search and rescue and learn how the air force does things. Even got sent to an actual (if, abbreviated) military school. Pretty neat for a kid...

He is obsessed with it!!!  OMG, he loves it so much.  There are so many opportunities to do cool stuff, it's unbelievable.  He has flown a Cessna twice now, and is considering getting his pilot's license.  He can do it for free 5 times, and after that, only pays $10 per flight!!  Their mission at this point is to try to get kids to love flying, and then to help them get their pilots license for as cheap as possible.  Basically, they will help pay for everything, lots of pilots giving their time to train, etc.  It's awesome.

There still should be a strong service component in it too. Continue to encourage him with the flying aspect, but push him to get his observer and ground search and rescue certifications.

Lotta kids like to fly, but SAR, besides being rewarding and helpful to his community, looks good on applications...

There aren't as many opportunities for SAR, but he will take advantage of them as they come up.  But thanks for the info, we may look for some other opportunities as he gets older.

In Texas, I don't even know if they do SAR anymore. All the missions seem to be taking pictures for damage assessment. They do emergency services training, but don't use it.
