I also would venture to say that many people on this forum were homeschooled. Statist public schools churn out statist citizens...while homeschoolers tend to be more independent and willing to go against the flow. Of course, there are exceptions.
Sorry, I am from a (as liberal as they come, handout mentality, public highschool, and area for that matter) but for some reason I never could be like that and ended up labeled a conservative. I love it when I go home for family get togethers and we always end up arguing. I like to poke the fire since almost all my Aunts are either High school liberal teachers, and two college liberal professors.

Why do you say that President Obama is not liberal? It is hard for me to see why anyone could think that when they look at his policies and his philosophy. Just curious as to why you would think that...
For the record, I'm a teenage homeschooler and am very conservative, and, like Doug, do not consider myself a Republican.

Yikes, what's with all the anti-liberal stuff in here?
I'm a major liberal... I'm pro-social works, I'm pro-abortion rights, I'm pro-gay rights, pro-universal healthcare, pro-gun control, anti-religion in government/schools/etc. (also, I'm former military)... I'm curious where all of this hatred for liberals comes from when we had a willfully ignorant (conservative religious) president at the helm for 8 years who drove this ship straight up the creek. As far as I can see, it's not the liberals who have been screwing things up for the past nigh-decade! I think this anti-liberal stuff is a bit uncalled-for!
For those of you who say that Obama only has high approval ratings because he's new... you may be right. After all, Bush had high approval ratings in the beginning, and look where that went  . However, I think this president is much more of a thinker and a planner than Mr. Bush could ever claim to be. I think it's a bit laughable that so many conservatives/Republicans are salivating for his downfall, seeing as how some of these people are the very same who used to rabidly attack anti-Bush people (me) for speaking out against him, saying that we should respect Bush just because he's the president. What a woefully, blindly partisan nation we've become!

Gary....you got a new name?
I don't know how many times I have to say this but Bush is not and never was a conservative! I was right there with you on the incompetence parade. I agree with you the Obama is a better thinker and planner but no one really knows what he is thinking! And his first steps in office haven't exactly inspired my confidence. I can somewhat understand why you are for/against the things you listed but universal health care? I am genuinely curious why you think that is a good idea. It sounds good on the surface, but just as a person I don't want it.

No, I'm still here as myself, a free thinking, liberal leaning American. Listen to M Cunningham, sounds like he has a plan. By the way. CAN YOU SMELLLLLLLLLLL WHAT BARACK IS COOKING? Authentic American fare, flavored w/Liberalism w/a tint of Socialism. Try it, you might like it. That is all for now......Out!

Farmerboy,
Re: my interest in universal healthcare... I've seen far too many people in my family and my husband's family get dropped by their insurance due to having cancer or diabetes or heart problems... My mother is a veteran of the US Army but she works at Walmart and cannot afford her medical care or prescriptions. I think it's awful that healthcare has become a business all about the bottom line. My (late) mother-in-law was denied coverage for the only type of chemo that her oncologist recommended for her ovarian cancer. So her options were either to a.) not get the chemo, or b.) pay $6,000 upfront for a month's chemo!! Who can afford that? It was a truly terrible decision for her to have to make. She chose the former and went with a different (covered by insurance) type of chemo that is not as effective on her type/stage of cancer. She passed away 5 years ago, when my husband was only 25. I've just seen too much of that.

Yes, and it smells really bad.

I'm with Farmerboy on this one. Complete oxymoron. There was a time when socialism and communism were considered inherently anti-American (as they indeed are). Whatever happened to that?

I'm w/you. People don't give a rats ass until it's them or someone close to them. Salaries are out of whack, large pensions are being paid on taxpayers dime, obscene bonuses are given out for doing a job AND doing it very poorly, we might have a little more dough for some of these programs if greed wasn't at the root of this. Too many are getting too much for doing too little. As long as the wealthy have the cash to afford healthcare, you won't get a break from them. I watched my wife get numerous perks when she worked in banking and back then I bitched about it. Box seats for clients my butt, it was for their greedy little fannies. I've said it over and over again, until it's personal, you won't get nary a concern from anybody. And for anybody who thinks I'm just jealous because they have the cash and I don't, you don't know squat. I gave up a six figure salary for a job where I could be w/my family more. I like $$$$ as much as the next person, but I'm not married to it. When I read stories like yours M Cunningham, it really torques me that this country has gotten to this point. Talking to my cousin last night, he works in gov't for Soc Security, he said he handles many vets claims for PTSD and other issues such as lost limbs. He told me their lives are ruined and it's a sad as heck to witness. Like he also mentioned, people outside (civilians) don't really understand, they don't witness it. He was a proud Marine also so he knows both sides. Why the ramble? Because that's what I do. Bring the truth to the forefront and upset some in academia land. So what! People having huge homes, wasting energy, having a good time while many in this country don't have health care. They watch loved ones die when there were other options. And people still want to talk about the free market system and we don't need gov't intervention. What I also like are the ones that have the strategies for winning the war, you know, from the work table. Why waste all that knowledge when you can take your smart butt down to MEPS and sign up. Show em the battle plan you drew up on the napkin, I'm sure they'd love to see it. See first hand what the price is for that frickin big home you've got. While national healthcare has drawbacks, everyone in this country should be entitled, that's right, let me spell it out for you, ENTITLED to coverage. How did this country get to the point where you get paid an exhorbitant salary and then you get a bonus for cutting the workforce, sending jobs overseas and ruining the company. They are laughing at us. You want $$$ for national healthcare, start w/the money grubbers (BANKING/FINANCIAL) and work your way out towards gov't (STATE/NATIONAL) and keep slashing salaries of our education system which is a farce. Totally overhaul the pension system, stop the ridiculous pensions, high three, all that crap and get a grip of all the wasteful, crooked spending. But we don't want to touch any of these, do we? All we hear is national healthcare is too expensive. Save it. That does not compute. That's my start-up plan and you won't find it on any napkin.
