Lib Arts Health + Wellness Concentration
#21
(05-19-2021, 02:29 PM)bjcheung77 Wrote: Depending on the experience of your partner and other similar courses they've taken, there are several routes to take in order to get this BALS Concentration.  The first option would be through PLA the entire Area of Study/Concentration that can't be test-out-able.  Another option since they don't want to pay the residency waiver fee, is to complete the AOS from TESU using the flat-rate tuition.  Then there is this option, if they've got the time, to complete a double degree using the combo above and also using Pell Grant!
I've heard about the PLA idea (vaguely).  I didn't know they were still around and still used, though.  Not at all sure how they work or how to learn about them.  Are they a quicker route to the end goal?  Are they a cheaper route to the end goal?  He did tell me he is willing to take a little longer to get the degree he wants.  Appreciate the ideas!

Thank you!!  That is great!!

Okay, I will check it out, thank you for the suggestion.  Excelsior allows most of the credits to be brought in, right?  Similar to TESU?  Do they accept Sophia credits?  Do they have the same RA requirements, etc. like that?  If they require more UL courses are those credits readily available?

Excelsior allows you to bring in all but 7 credits to TESU's 6. However, it only costs a little bit more to take 13 credits instead of 7. They do accept Sophia ( https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/So...lency_List ). EC does NOT have a RA credit requirement. They require 30 UL credits. Even though they accept NCCRS sources like Coopersmith and Davar, it can be difficult to get enough UL credit for some degrees.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it.  Hope it will be straightforward finding the right information in order to compare.  I feel like it is a whole new area to be learned (like a foreign language almost).  It would be amazing if it works out!

PLA can be a cheaper option. The real question is does he like to write? There is a good bit of writing involved with PLAing. When going for this option he would have to prove he has knowledge on the subject. That could be proven with certificates from free resources, volunteer hours, a letter from work saying what he did, a newspaper article, etc. He'll use whatever evidence he has, write a narrative explaining how he got his learning, and explain his knowledge of the subject. I've heard of really long portfolios, but the ones I did weren't that long.

Actually he is an amazing writer.  Is there a link or source that explains this idea?  What if he doesn't have the knowledge already?  I don't think he knows much about the "Biological Aspects of Aging" for instance.  Thanks!

Here's the PLA database it has some courses that can be PLA'D. (Even if the course isn't in the database you can still PLA it)

https://www.tesu.edu/degree-completion/p...os-to-view

Here's some examples (I personally didn't use them)

And Here's a thread I did about my PLA since this I have PLA'D 12 more credits lol

Well, using your link I did discover they list TWO of the required classes (FIT211 and FIT230).  Definitely worth pursuing.  Now I'll go back and read the other info you posted.  Thank you!

And, do PLAs count toward the RA credit count?  And, do they cost the same as a regular course?  Would he have to be enrolled at TESU and approved to do the PLA (seems likely)?
