Psychology or Liberal Arts with Excelsior University

Hi there, 

My daughter, 16 yo, international student, currently holds 57 credits. She is working towards a BSLA at EU, but recently we also thought about Psychology at EU. We are looking for a degree that is cost efficient. Is Psychology more expensive than LA? Is there anyone who wants to share their degree plan for the Psychology option, so that we can see whether it suits us?

I'm not 100% sure about Psychology at Excelsior, but I'm pretty sure that it's going to be about the same monetary cost as a Liberal Studies degree.The biggest difference is going to be time. There are specific courses that are required, so your daughter couldn't just take "the easiest" Liberal Studies courses and call it a day. dfrecore is the main "Excelsior person" here, so she'd be better able to tell you what needs to be done.

That said, Psychology at TESU is going to be similar (though not exactly the same). While waiting for dfrecore to show up, you can get an idea of what might be required for Psychology at Excelsior by looking at the TESU degree plan here: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...egree_Plan If your daughter isn't on track to graduate before she turns 18 anyway, TESU might be a better choice. It really depends on a number of factors, though.

There shouldn't be much difference in cost. I always do encourage young ppl who are interested in psychology fill the elective portions of their degree with in-person science classes with a lab. IMHO the big difference with psychology over a LA route of study is the importance of emphasizing objective truths, and a thorough understanding of the scientific method.

Please fill in the addendum, template to provide more details such as the budget, commitments, study habits, etc. With more details, we'll know which way to play things in your favor. Here's an example, if you have a budget set for the BSLA and it just costs you $300-400 more for the BA Psych, we need to know if that is within your budget or not, we want to know if the student favors exams or alternative credit courses. This way, we can either recommend CLEP/MS, or Sophia.org for lower level, etc, the more info, the better we can help.

I'd like to ask: why are you leaning towards Liberal Arts?

To be honest, for Europe - especially Netherlands, I would strongly recommend against a Liberal Arts/Studies degree. Why? Because Europeans outside of forums like this don't tend to know WTH that is. If your employer doesn't know what your degree is/does, you're not getting hired. Do you want to spend the rest of your life explaining what "Liberal Studies" means to employers? An American Psych degree from a random university may or may not be all that valuable in Europe, but at least employers will know what it is. There's also a good chance of getting into a European Master's program in the future - a possibility that might not exist with a Liberal Studies degree.

I lean towards it because it's flexible and fast. But if this could be the same for Psychology, I might give that a chance. Since my daughter has got almost half of the amount of total credits now, we will have to start specifying.
