Is there a CBE program with more videos?
#1
I think this is my downfall... too much reading.  I don’t *mind* reading.  And yes, I do expect some reading.  But honestly, I think I need more video.  Why don’t these CBE programs have more pre-recorded videos?  I can easily play a video while working or cooking or on the elliptical or something.  And that would help me to take in more information.  (And not have to choose between studying and exercise.  LOL)  But so many of these modules are ONLY reading a zillion articles.  I don’t have time for that type of focus.  I have tried the text-to-speech apps and they are soooo bad.  It just seems like a no-brainer to me.  They can record once and continue to use the video until it needs to be updated for whatever reason.   are there any out there with more overall videos?   Please.  CBE schools - are you listening????   Big Grin

<insert echo here> <and again here> Please. CBE schools - are you listening???? <heck, why not another echo here too> I think it's just that, for any CBE program, they want you to do the reading/writing and research, whatever it is needed for their assignments/projects so they can assess your progress, I guess they just haven't looked at the visual aspect of retaining information and other things such as that...

Heck, if they were like... you still have to read these articles and use written references for papers, that’s cool. But for me, it is SUPER helpful to have some audio visual aids to really digest the info. My mind wanders less that way. Can I get on some sort of advisory committee? I’ll give them some research on learning styles. Maybe fill them in on the perspectives of working mother students. Smile

The reading comes directly from textbooks in my experience. My CBE program had a lot of videos, but the bulk of the class was reading. The courses are updated every few years this means a professor would have to rerecord the videos. At my school, they also were teaching on campus so they already had a full-time workload/course load. They would also have to provide accurate closed captioning to be ADA compliant. The programs aren't designed to be easy so one can complete other tasks while learning. I have read chapters on the elliptical and treadmill. You really can't pay attention to 2 things at the same time and learn most of what you need. Multitasking doesn't really exist. You're not giving either task 100%. You're really switch tasking which doesn't make you productive. I struggle with ADHD and this is a HUGE issue I deal with every day, all day.

That reminds me... my current advisor set up weekly calls with me. He is supposed to call me on Wednesdays at 11:30 am. I haven’t heard from him since May 12th.

Yeah yeah... I know, I know.  I have a son with ADHD.... and probably have it myself.  But I definitely can do the elliptical and a video.  I was doing a Coursera course which was all video.   I screencast it to my big TV in my room, turn up the volume... and focus on the video. The nice thing is... I forget I am on the elliptical and don’t focus so much on wanting to get off the darn thing.  I just keep going as long as the video has my attention.   It was a course I found that was similar to my other classes and it really helped me notice what the heck I was reading in my other class.  It was like... oh yeah, one of my modules *DID* mention that.  DOH!

Heck, they can record their LIVE classes. That works too.  Setup the camera and - GO!.

Due to privacy laws, many schools will not record classes or Zoom meetings. One of my LSU professors discussed this last week that only the intro Zoom would be recorded and it was recorded because he had to reschedule it the last minute. He explained the university's policies on this.

At the CBE program I was in, the CBE courses aren't exactly the same as the on campus version. You also would not want to sit through 50 minute lectures 3 times a week for 15 weeks. That's 45 50 minute videos. Yeah no thanks! LOL

Looks like you're at Walden and they're online only so they don't have classes to record.

I wouldn't mind that many lecture videos so long as I had a choice. Maybe with one section I want to watch a video while I actually want to read another section. It's so easy to miss something in the text that you wouldn't miss in a lecture or vice versa. As long as the lectures are actually interesting and not read by Ben Stein ("Bueller? Bueller?"), it'd be great.

OMG, this reminded me of my Philosophy professor that I had at Edinboro.  He wrote his own textbook.  In class he simply read to us FROM the text book.  When he couldn’t be there, he would have a video recording of him reading from his textbook... complete with cat walking across his patio table.  And he was so monotone.  Totally a Ben Stein type.  I could not stay awake in that class no matter how hard I tried.  Zzzzzzzz..... huh?

I have not taken a CBE course where the reading took as long as 45 50 minute lecture videos. I have watched part of a class on OnlineDegree and I fell asleep! The guy was that boring and monotone. When I watch videos on Coursera for a certificate I'm working on, I watch them at double speed and thankful that works! When I watched the USF DEI video on LinkedIn, I couldn't watch them on double speed. I switched to YouTube to see if I could watch it faster and I could. I was so excited. Those videos were all over 2 hours long and that's just too long at one time.

Even more reason they can make a legit video.  No live classes to take up time. Wink
