English Composition without Essay
#1
I'm trying to find out if the CLEP English Composition w/o Essay test consists of questions regarding misplaced modifiers, pronoun errors, subject/verb agreement error, etc. Will I have to indicate if a sentence contains an error in diction, verbose, and faulty grammar? Is that on the actual test? Please someone let me know.

Thanks so much!

I'm guessing you couldn't find the answer when you searched the site. I know that can be frustrating, especially if you've spent an hour or more looking for the answer. banghead

Most of us here have taken English Comp WITH essay so maybe no one who has been on here today knows the answer to your question. I'm sorry to say that I don't know the answer, either, because my daughter didn't take that test. Hopefully, someone who knows will come on and respond soon.

I'll take a stab at this:

Quote:I'm trying to find out if the CLEP English Composition w/o Essay test consists of questions regarding misplaced modifiers, pronoun errors, subject/verb agreement error, etc

Yes, that's what much of the exam consists of. They'll give you multiple examples of sentences, and you have to answer what's wrong. Some of them are laughably easy. Others, not so much. Punctuation always tripped me up. Semicolons, comma's, etc.

Quote:Will I have to indicate if a sentence contains an error in diction, verbose, and faulty grammar?

Yes again. Not so many on verbosity, but more in the terms of identifying when it's a run-on sentence.

English Composition CLEP Free Study Guide

Check out the free resources on this one. There's quite a few that have example questions. They also have a practice exam available for this test, which shows you pretty much exactly what they're going to be asking. Fifth or sixth line down takes you to a page that shows you how to access the practice exam.

I actually took the English Composition w/essay so anyone can correct me if I am wrong on this. From what I understand of the English Compostition w/o essay is that about 55% of the test will deal with identifying sentence errors, improving sentences and restructuring sentences - primarily just looking at passages and sentences and figuring out what's wrong with them. The other 45% of the test will deal with how well you know about revising work in progress and analyzing writing (ie identifying the thesis, coherence, point of views, sentence combining, emphasis within sentences, type of audience the work is appealing to, etc...).

So I guess the question to your answer is "yes"! The English Comp. w/o essay will deal with misplaced pronouns, grammar mess-ups, and sentences errors just as much as or more than the English Comp. w/essay. Again, if someone wants to comment who actually took the w/o essay test, that would help as well. This is information I've heard from others who took the test and also from the Offical Clep Study Guide.

I hope this helps some! Good luck with your studying! I wish you the best!!

I bought Rudman's CLEP English Composition study guide, and in it there are several pages of questions asking that I select either a "V" for verbosity, a "D" if the sentence contains an error in diction, etc. When I read a question, I have no idea what to put. I'm having a very difficult time with this part of the study guide, that's why I was kind of hoping and praying the actual test does not pose questions like that.

Again, thanks so much for your replies.
