Completley new to college and need Help bad

How is going everybody i recently ,Came across this forum while researching my journey to school.

Let me just say i hope i can get all the help in the world as i am independent ,Living on my own, with no college guidance from other sources besides some one trying to sell me a degree any responses would be much appreciated.

Lets start with this

Age-26
high school diploma
No college credits or experience.
access to High end computers for school work and book discounts via a third party grant.

I am unemployed and a unpaid intern at a private post film company Because i have experience in the Video production field with no prior schooling.

But that is not what i want to do with my life.

My main objective and primary Goal is to work in the field of social working or even Nursing...My Goal is to help other people ,from different types of communities or environments,in social working/hospitals,schools,jail,or even a H/r or Business.

While maintaining what we consider a Medium paying Job with the cost of living now.

But i want to crawl before i walk so my objective is to tackle my dreams and desires on what i really want to do ...Now that you know all about me lol i have a few questions.


I am in search of a online school to get my feet wet in my degree.

But the thing is i do not know if i want to complete my entire schooling or degree at a online school so i am trying to do about 6 months to a year with a certain school online and then Transfer my credits from online to a Cuny based city or state school In New york city.(as of right now due to personal situation i can not go to a local community college or university) until about a year or so ,But i want to start my schooling now online.

Im not sure if this is possible though..if any one has done this before please shed light on this...Do any cuny based Brick/mortar schools accept online transfer credits and students or am i wasting my time By starting online.

Next my schools of interests online are thomas edison state college,and charter oak ,But i think charter oak requires 9 college credits to even come in to the school,mind you guys i have no prior college expierence..These schools all seem to fit my budget and offer nursings/sociology/computer engineering courses and with my Grants i would only be taking out small loans if even that.

Another question is is it possible to just pay for certain semesters when i sign up for schools like these? Or when i pay a course tuiton or degree tutiton am i obligated to stay in that school for ever that is one of my bigger concerns? am i in some type of Contract that i must complete a certain amount of credits? Lets say i go to 2 semesters and get 17 credits and decide to leave do i have to continue paying these people ? How does it work?
do i pay by the class or credit? By the whole 4 year program? by the Year?

Like i said earlier i have only been given advise from admission advisors who look for money for there best interests..So i need personal advice,any one who cares to help Good karma in life and a thank you will be returned:iagree:

How about checking with the schools that you want to transfer your online credit with and see what their regulations are regarding clep tests and DSSTs. If the school accepts x number of credits and that was the school I was interested in then I would begin by testing out of some of the general education requirements for a decree. For instance, English, math, history, etc. I would not test out of my science or specific pyschology, sociology etc if that was the school that I was going to finish my decree with. I took 30 hours to my local community college through cleps and graduated within six months. Just a suggestion as to where to begin.

Thanks i already know the school i want to go to and have it set but i have a question am i in a certain contract with Tesc or can i leave after a year or a semester is paid,or will they come back and say hey we can not transfer you and you have to continue at our school

AA or Ba if i do not plan on completing my whole degree online ?do i have to complete 60 credits or 120 credits or can i complete a certain amount and leave?

Lets say the Cuny i chose did accept most of my credits and the hours were credited

Associate degrees requires a total of 60 credits...lets say i got 17 or 30 credits with Tisc already and i wanna leave or even if i did the whole 60 with tisc

if i was to apply would i be better of trying to enroll in the Associates degree at TISC and then transfer my credits over to a Cuny and get my bachelors from there?

OP- I'd opt for nursing over social work. It pays better and you may need a masters degree to be competitive for jobs as a social worker (but check on that).

Before choosing a career do somber research into pay scales and job availability. Having a bachelors degree guarantees you nothing in this world, especially certain degrees. An ex of mine had a bachelors in criminal justice and since she didn't want to go into law enforcement she ended up working at the mall. She was a manager but the point is she could have done a business degree and that would have better prepared her.

If you have zero credits then start studying here, go to the library and get some clep test prep and dsst test prep books. You cant go wrong with clep testing.

Go to the United States Department of Labor website The U.S. Department of Labor Home Page and open their tab called Occupational Outlook Handbook. This lists EVERY job and the real data abou those jobs.

I'd never suggest you go into a job "for the money" but if you'd equally enjoy social work and nursing, Yenisei is right. My dear friend is a social worker, she had a BSW (bachelor's of social work) for the first several years of her career, but had to get her MSW (masters of social work) to get out of case worker status. Case workers are paid very little and over worked. They are also likely to be called into court if someone "slips through the cracks" in the system. I'm not debating the issue- just saying how it is. In my community, case workers earn about $24,000 per year as a new grad.

In contrast, you can be a nurse with an associate degree from your local community college. In my community, new grad nurses start at $44,000

NURSING: a community college degree= 2 years, costing less than $20,000 (mine will cost $7000 because of my CLEP credit)

SOCIAL WORK: a bachelor's degree+ masters degree=6 years, costing any where from $40,000 up to $70,000



You can do general education courses (and prereqs) online. Both social work and nursing will require on campus work. There is a MSW online through University of Iowa- not many others like that, but you'd still need your bachelor's to even start. I'd suggest going to your school, talking to them about their own online course policy (what can I take?) CUNY offers a zillion online courses. Then ask what can I CLEP out of? Use CLEP and online to get anything and everything completed first- then go in and knock out your requirements on campus.

none of the legitimate schools are going to bind you to any sort of requirement to stay with them. College is pretty much a pay as you go proposition......unless you sign some sort of contract........but a "legite school doesn't work that way. The advice to check with the school you ultimately hope to attend to see what they will accept is good advice. In general though your best bet is to be sure you pick an accredited school. as a rule earned credits are transferrable among similiarly accredited schools. for example all od the "big 3" TESC, COSC, EC, are RA or regionally accredited. Typically most state schools are also RA so in general credits transfer easily among those types of schools. SO, if you take say english comp at CC it will be accepted at any other RA school. There may be less ability to transfer if your into some specified program. For example my Paramedic classes that where good for 40 some hours at the CC level did not all transfer to COSC (though most did).

Your best bet os to pick RA (or some other legitimate accreditation) and stick to those schools.....especially if you are going to be transferreing around. Note that the big 3 are called that in large part because of their very liberal tranfer policies and lack of any significant residency requirement.

This site is devoted largely to using CLEP or DSST to test out of college classes. For example you might study Human Growth and Developement on your own and test out of that class......its a common requirement for Nursing school and also applies to general Psychology type degree's. Might be a good place for you to start.

Thanks i am starting to research clep and dsst test.

So basically if i take these test they will transfer over credits depending on how i score? lets say i test out with 64 credits (just a example lol) ...that means 64 credits would go towards my degree? Im so new to all the testing and how college works like i mentioned i might need a book on College for dummies.banghead

And i know how bad it could be with just a bachelors or any degree now days in one field.

I have plenty of friends who have bachelors and Masters in different fields and can barley get a $10 a hour jobs.


I know that nursing and Rns are in very high demand and the pay is good in my area , so i will most likely consider that since it was in my top 3 choices.

Social working is not really in much demand and it would take me Realistically 10 years to get the proper schooling to obtain a masters or Phd with a decent paying job with anything in psych or social working ,but i always thought social working or behavioral science Would be more flexible in different fields of work oppose to a Registered nurse which is strictly medical.

I mean i can always change my major right?
