Hi all,
I am waiting on my transcript evaluation, but in the mean time it looks like the consensus here is to earn credits from alternative sources. I have a dual major (?) associates from a California CC in Natural Science and Social Science. I have a few questions that would probably be more appropriate for one of the folks at UM that are reportedly swamped, so here I am!
I am planning to earn a BABA - M&L. I hope to complete it as quickly as I’m able, but I am hesitant to try credit alternatives like study.com & Sophia. I don’t have much in the way of out-of-pocket funds for now and will be relying on student aid for tuition. I don’t want my transcripts all over the place, either. So, first question for the pros, will I be excessively drawing out my time at UMPI by avoiding these courses?
Second, what courses should I take in general and on those websites to maximize my potential at UMPI? I am hopeful that the science and stats w lab will count! I can add my course history if needed..
Third, how long does the program take to complete if you complete all 60 units at UMPI versus using the turbo-speed alternatives? Is it worth it/any value to doing it this way?
I have passed several accelerated intersession courses at CCs before, so I am familiar with the pace, and have a flexible schedule until my region defrosts next spring.
Thanks for the help.

What have you already taken at the Cali school? That's going to make a huge difference. If you do not already have at least a biological science, a physical science, a lab science to go with one of the science classes, and a foreign language, you could wind up wasting an entire session on just those classes alone. Aside from those, without seeing what you already have, it's difficult go give specific answers.
In general, every 10 classes (30 credits) tend to take most students 2-3 sessions. Assuming you don't need the sciences or foreign language from UMPI, that means with 60 credits you're looking at 4-6 sessions or 8-12 months at UMPI. $6000-$9000 minimum.
If your budget is tight, I would highly recommend 1-2 months at Sophia and 1-2 months at Study.com - this will potentially save you thousands of dollars. You'll wind up with just 3 or 4 transcripts. Depending on what your ultimate goals are, it's not bad!
California CC - unsure about transcript costs here; $10?
UMPI - less than $5 per transcript https://www.umpi.edu/offices/registrars-...-requests/
Study.com - free transcripts whether through Credly or directly from Study.com
Sophia.org - free transcripts through Credly, $5 if you go to a graduate school that wants the Parchment transcript "directly" from Sophia
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA
Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

Hi Rachel & thanks for your reply. I can definitely see the benefit of taking these courses in preparation for UMPI. I will upload a screenshot of my course history now. I will probably need a foreign language as I haven’t done one yet.

I think your assessment is on point for what a full time student can achieve with UMPI.
I fully agree to begin with Sophia first.

Hi Ashkir and thanks for your reply, too.
I uploaded my transcripts, but I won’t be continuing in California.
Is yourpace typically covered by student aid or does it fall short due to the structure?

are you eligible for PELL grant? If so, it should cover your YourPace

So, it looks like you do have at least 1 lab science, 1 bio science, and 1 physical science. But no foreign language. You'll at least need Spanish or French from Sophia before applying to UMPI.

@Wk17, Welcome to the board. That's a pretty good intro post but it's missing most of the information asked for in the addendum and template. It's great to ask questions and look for answers to those questions, but without knowing your budget, commitments, study habits, etc, it's hard to really provide you a concrete answer to each of them. It all depends on the student, their answers to the info requested, and their overall situation. Please update us with the info here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...Area-works
