As best I can tell, someone at TESC is giving you bad info (their notorious for that). Here's a link from their catalog that states that College Composition General is good for both English Composition 101 and 102: Undergraduate Ways to Earn Credit - Thomas Edison State College - acalog ACMSââ¢
Look under the CLEP heading, where the catalog states exactly which CLEP test are good for which classes. Incidentally, this page from their site along with the credit distribution for your particular degree choice are most of the info you need to plan your degree.
