DSST internet-based exams have instant results (to you) for all except the public speaking exam. If you designate a university on your DSST registration page (you complete this page at your first exam visit and then view it before each exam), they should receive your official score report within 2 weeks (especially if the university is within the USA). This is not sent electronically to the schools, but by first class mail.
For those candidates who are forced to take the old paper-pencil DSST exams, yes, it can take 4-6 weeks for you to even receive your results! Last I knew, this was the full process: You sit for the exam at the DSST test center, the proctor mails them to DSST headquarters in St. Paul, MN (usually by a trackable method), the DSST team members open the mail in the order it has been received, scantron sheets are processed through the scanner a couple of times a week, the official score reports are also printed twice a week and are then processed into first-class mail. Now imagine what happens if the candidate is not careful in "bubbling" their address and/or bubbling in the correct 4-digit code for their institution!
Oh, back in the day, DSST did offer an expedited service - candidates would call or email this request, knowing they would be charged an extra fee. The DSST team members knew to pull those official results once printed and send them to the school by overnight delivery. I do not know if they still offer this service.
If you want to know your results right away, make sure the DSST test center delivers the IBT version (NOT the paper version).
