English Comp w/essay PASS!
#1
Hey all!

I just received my English Comp with Essay results after 22 days of waiting... and I passed with a 68!!!

A huge thanks to everyone who critiqued my essays in my previous post!

The essential study resources I used were, 1) English COMEX guide, and 2) The Lively Art of Writing.

The actual exam was far less imposing than I imagined it would be...

Thanks again!

Wow! That's great! I took English Composition last summer and was sure I did well but missed by 3 points.

I'm planning to take the College Composition with essay. (English Comp. is no longer available and was replaced by Coll. Comp.) My problem is the essay writing. Is there any advice you can give me on that? My problem is writing the essay so spontaniously... I botch it up there. By nature, I need to think, plan, draft, revise... and then actually write it up... I do well like that. I'm not so good at writing it up so "on the moment" while being timed.

Help!

I knew you could do it!! Or should I say "My metapsychological postulations have been empirically validated via proximate actualization."

Help!

I can relate 100 percent. Essay writing has always been my weak point; I always thought that writing a good, impromptu essay in 45 minutes was tantamount to climbing Mt. Everest in 45 minutes. What I didn't realize is the fact that timed essay writing is like any other task; it is hard until you learn how to do it. Everything is hard as long as you don't know / haven't practiced the techniques. So here is my recommendation for you.

1) All you need is one essay book, provided it's the right one. Get the book, The Lively Art of Writing. It's second to none. It will teach you, unimpeachably, everything you'll ever need to know about essay writing.

2) Then practice, practice, practice. ;-) Here's what I did. Practice writing essays for 2 weeks. Write an essay every day the first week. Write two essays every day the second week, the first 4 days. The last 3 days, write three essays per day, and give yourself only 15 minutes per essay. That makes the 45 minutes seem LONG! 15 minutes will only give you time to make a very rough sketch, but be sure to make it a full five paragraphs. They will be super short; it's great practice in coming up with 3 points quick.

I did that and went from hardly knowing what an essay was, to getting the 68 on the Clep.

There again, I asked God for help and trust that He was the only reason I really passed; God helps those who ask and do their part.

Haha, you're great. Or should I say, You are absolutely honorificabilitudinitatibus.

Hey, I used words like effulgent and effervescent in the essay. They must not have minded... ;-)

Thanks for your advice. You are right. I need to practice. The book sounds like a good idea too.
I'm nervous about this one. More nervous than I've been with any other tests. Somehow, failing it once reinforced my belief that I can't do it. But I can! And I will! With the help of god, of course.

Nobody should mind the use of large words, provided they are used with precision. Sounds like that's what you did.

Happycamper,
Thanks for suggesting the "Lively Art of Writing". I bought the book and I'm almost through reading it. I feel more confident about writing an essay than I've ever been. I now understand why I failed the other clep. My writing was totally off the rocker! The book is clear and precise. Love it!

BUT- on the new english clep test, "College Composition w/ essay" I'm required to write 2 essays in 70 minutes! That seems impossible! I'm freaking out! Besides, the second essay requires me to synthesize two provided sources. Synthesis refers to combining the sources and your position to form a cohesive, supported argument. You must develop a position and incorporate both sources. You must cite the sources whether you are paraphrasing or quoting. I feel totally lost!

Any advice... anyone??? I must, must, MUST pass this clep test!

Is there a special format for me to follow when writing a synthesis??
