I am reviewing the Amberton catalog and came across this section (see below). Based on number 5, I am wondering about the transferability of the vesi/Morningside credits because Amberton does not seem to offer EDUC. courses. Has Amberton officially accepted those course in for transfer credits ?

GRADUATE TRANSFER OF CREDITS
Assuming work is allowed to transfer from an accredited institution, the
following guidelines will be followed:
1. Transfer work from another regionally accredited institution will be evaluated
upon admission.
2. No grade below B will be accepted as transfer work.
3. Individual courses will be accepted, but no grade points. Each Amberton
University transfer student will begin with a new grade point average.
4. No more than twelve (12) hours maximum will be allowed in transfer
toward a graduate degree.
5. All work allowed in transfer to Amberton University on a graduate level
must be directly related to courses offered at Amberton University.
6. Graduate hours will not be evaluated for transfer until the official transcript
of the bachelor's degree is received.
7. The age of transfer work may influence transferability.

That was what bothered me as well, however, as I was told that statement would not apply towards the MA in Prof. Dev. degree. For that degree is one where ANY graduate course could be applied towards it up to 12 credits worth. I was worried about it too, that's why I called about it twice and first spoke to a graduate adviser, then called back a couple days later and spoke to the director of the graduate studies. I am not sure how that rule may apply towards the other degrees. I think it may only apply toward specific courses that are needed for each degree, and not necessarily the electives or the Prof. Dev. degree. Since that degree don't have any specific courses that have to be taken towards it. Just call them though to verify what that statement is towards exactly. Oh, yeah and I noticed that they now are offering a number of Certificates for Bachelor and Graduate studies. I re-configured my classes so that I could get a Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Mgmt within the MA in Prof. Dev. Degree at the same time. I am a little concerned that it is only a 12 credit Certificate though, but I think a problem with that would only come into play is if I decided to teach community college. I usually see them either want the degree in that subject itself or an 18 graduate credits Certificate. Oh well, I figure it would work everywhere else anyway.

I do have a teaching credential (another state, though), so I'm debating between Amberton and Morningside - they both have a couple of interesting choices as to degrees. Somebody mentioned that the VESI courses may not seem to fit with Amberton's own courses (MA in Prof. Dev. excepted), but I'm wondering if they might also be accepted in the Family Studies MA. 12 credits are counseling electives. One could argue that some of the VESI courses are related to counseling: Traumatized Child, Child Abuse, Infant and Toddler Mental Health, classes on ADHD, Autism, Asperger's, Aggression, etc.

I thought about that myself with their counseling courses... you'd just have to ask about that with them. Just make sure you indicate that these courses would come from a college like Morningside and not indicate that it's from VESi. I don't know how they would look at the course then, just the way some schools aren't okay with Straighterline. Amberton does have what they call an Electronic Degree Plan, that is basically a way to try out all their degrees against the courses that were transferred in. If you are looking at the Family Svcs or the Prof. Dev., you could just do the VESi courses that you think would apply towards the Family Svcs degree and if they don't apply as counseling courses, then just do the Prof. Dev. degree. That would be so cool to take 18 credits at VESi and apply them towards Morningside Teaching degree, while also applying 12 of those credits towards Amberton's degree.

There are some things that I am not keen on with Amberton, but I think it's more towards particular instructors. I have a professor who believes that if you are doing what is asked of you, you are entitled to a 'B'. You only are eligible for an 'A' from him if you do OUTSTANDING work. Which means going way beyond what he is asking you to do, and you need to figure out what he considers outstanding yourself.

Then there is a teacher who put in his syllabus that he grade people 72-78% if you provide basic information or in other words what is required.

The school has not told me what was transferred yet, because they had to have my bachelors degree first before they evaluate my graduate courses. They should be doing that very soon, since I just officially graduated from Excelsior October 16th. Which is when my transcript went out to Amberton. I suppose I'll call next week to see what the results are.

So far the school is alright, I just hate the way that some professors choose to teach. Since 'bout time you figure what they are looking for in an 'A' assignment you are 3 courses in out of 5. Which is very disturbing to me since I always achieve for the 'A'. Being that I acquired a Magna Cum Laude with my bachelors degree and Cum Laude with my Associates degree you might see how disturb I am. I do not see acquiring any type of honors with them as of now anyway. Especially with them not transferring in my graduate G.P.A. so far of 4.0. They only transfer in the credits, but not the G.P.A.

I suppose I just need to relax with it and do my best. I do have 8 classes to maintain a 3.0 average with, although that does mean I have 5 courses to go. I just don't like starting out shaky.
